The problem is that you are looking the P2 cards as storage. They are not. Those same two P2 cards will record as much video over time as you can record with 100,000 passes whis is vastly more than 400 tapes.

Additionally when you look at the time you have to spend in the edit suite digitizing, that too costs money so it really isn’t such a simple argument. It is all about a different workflow and never having to purchase aquisition tapes again. If you were working in DVCPRO HD you would quickly get to the point an equal amount being spent on tape vs. the P2 cards. Keep in mind this is not HDV we are recording here with long GOPs, compressed audio, and 4:2:0 color, this is DVCPRO HD which was designed for high end HD production.

What will be there is an engineering sample. Some features will likely not be working like the 1394 output will probably not be working. In general in the engineering sample world, the picture quality is in general not as good as the final, and the camera is much more fragile as they are hand made. At least this was the case with the SDX900. Of course the demo footage that we shot for display at NAB 2003 was shot with that sample and that footage got us an article in American Cinematographer and impressed a lot of customers.

Hi,

We are self-insured which is why the Panasonic Service facility did not insure it. If something had happened your camera would have been covered by Panasonic, and frankly it probably would be easier and faster to get the replacement out of Panasonic than it would UPS or Fed Ex.

Although I am not the product manager for the Varicam, I know that it has been used on a number of shows for National Geographic and Discovery. I think one of the more popular and current is American Chopper on Discovery. I beleive it was also used in coverage of the Super Bowl and a number of others. i will send Jeff a ping on this thread and perhaps he has time to chime in.

The short of it is is an HD standard and it is well accepted.

Hi Rob,

I imagine that the Century Optics is probably a very nice unit, and probably costs a good deal more, but I would imagine that it is better quality. Check the weight of it and make sure that it is light enough to hang on the front end of the DVX without support, in other words it has to weigh no more than the Panaosnic one, or it will need support.

I think the 4:2:0 only comes to haunt you in color correction. Altough one implementation that we used in the DVCPRO Progressive format, now defunct, was to do a quincunx shift between frames, that is the pixels shifted for the red and blue samples from frame to frame. But straight 4:2:0 can be problematic.

Hi Folks,

The PAL version of the camera will not do 1080P/50, it will do 1080P/25 and 1080i/50. As Barry pointed out, it just is not possible to capture 50 frames in 1080 and record them. Too much compression, it is an error on the European site, that stemmed from translation error. Hopefully they will correct it before too long.
