The AJ-D250 does not have a 601 output nor will the firewire allow a 720 by 486 output.

What they mean in their press announcement is that you can record out the HD-SDI port to a frame based codec, like HDCAM or DVCPROHD. Itis still an HDV camera and the 24F is cineframe not 24P. This camera uses the 1080iHDV codec, I bet.

That maybe true, but maybe not. Keep in mind that there is not a Hollywood production that does a tape recording of audio signals, it is all on disk drives or flash memory. It wasn’t that long ago 24 track tape machines were the norm, no longer.

Point is that were are in the process of moving from a tape based environs and there are resonable and logical questions about how do I deal with this as opposed to what I used to do. So there are things to be sorted out, but I really feel that the long term benefit of no longer having to digitize the footage seems so attarctive, that the way will be found and it won’t be the same for everyone.

Have you heard of Avid? They have these codecs and they do work on the PC platform.

The way I would work it is that at the end of the shoot I would hand my client 2 Hard drives full of footage. All digitized with a back up. Since they would be paying for DVCPRO HD tape and then have to work through the footage with a digitizing process, this may well seem like a bonus, all they need to do is mount the drive, import the clips and start editing. Save the archive decisions to later where it is not time sensitive to getting the job done and the invoice to the ultimate client.

But Brian, those are DVCPRO tapes, Metal Particle, completely different than Metal Evaporated which is what the HDV, and DV are based on. In fact the DVCPRO can go for many more passes than 4. I have a tape I have play for now six years as it tends to prove my point, I still do not have a drop out on it. But that is DVCPRO, MP. So no fuel on the fire at all. If we put a DVCPRO HD tape mechanism in the HVX200 it would immediately cost $16,000 more and would grow to a much larger size.

Hi Brian,

I feel as though I have asnwered this before but that may just be a memory of my saying it to someone; keep in mind there are no new questions about this camera. I just keep answering the same ones. 😉

Anyhow a plain firewire drive would need to have direction to go into record and this is not possible, however you should be able to transfer to a firewire drive from a P2 card after recording. You could record to a laptop under a Capture Now scenario or something like the Firestore that has DTE capability.

Toke, every production scenario has a solution and if you want to find one you will. There may be times that you rent a couple of extra P2 cards to give more time between P2 transfers, but in general in the sets that I have been on, ther is in general time. On an event shoot I would probably use a device like a Focus Enhancements Firestore, and frankly I would probably shoot it in DVCPRO50 and then if they ever wanted it upconverted to HD, it would do that very nicely.

Well if you did that with Metal Evaporated tape you would be pretty sorry. ME tape is not that robust and your video would be riddled with droputs by about the 10 pass. But since its reputation is so bad I would be hesitant to go to pass #2.

If I was going to shoot that event with the little camera I would send the signal out to a computer and just ingest that wat for both the long presentation and the 20 minute interview. Then the cutaways I would do on the P2 card.

The point of my post is that it is not long term storage and it is reusable. The cost of DV tape is just that DV tape. If we were working in DVCPRO HD that is the real comparison. People want to compare DVCPRO HD to HDV, it is not the same thing. Is it another low cost HD solution, yes, doe it have more compromises, yes. Some may feel that that is the way to go. I personally don’t.

Anyhow, not everything the camera records has to be on P2, there are other alternatives.
