From Panasonic press release e-mailed today

” Panasonic are offering operators a chance to ‘shake down’ all the new
cameras as well as current models on a live set which will be constantly
manned, moving and well lit.

Michael Erkelenz, Head of Production Management at PBE commented “Key
products at IBC this year will be the airing of the first working model of
Panasonic’s revolutionary new P2miniCam, the AG-HVX200 Camcorder. The
100Mbps HD P2miniCam, switchable between HD/SD and between interlaced and
progressive amid a host of other capabilities including variable frame
rate”.

Marc Irwin, Marketing Manager at Panasonic in the UK has been watching the
building interest in this Camcorder and said, “This product has stirred up
more internet activity than any other launch in this marketplace, ever and
is something the industry has been eagerly awaiting”.

tells that “pal”-version would be available “Fall 2005”, which is nice, but real news is:
“All 1080, 720 and 576 signals support 50 Hertz framerates in progressive mode!”
So we are getting 1080p50!!! This is great! I hope there’s also 1080p25/24…

There’s no possible way that it’ll do 1080/50p. Not gonna happen. That’s a mistake in translation.

1080p50 might be the next EBU rec. so there could be use for that.
Europeans are getting rid of interlacing with hdtv…
720p60@100Mbps means 200kB/frame(960*720)=2.3b/px
1080p50@100Mbps would be 250kB/frame(1440*1080)=1.3b/px
Quite a bit more compression…

Jan said at DV Expo East that the camera would only do 1080 24p. Kind of doubt that it would do 1080 50p and not 1080 60p.

Well, this is European version which AFAIK does not do even 1080p24.
1080p60 would be too much compression and there’s no plans to broadcast 1080p60 anywhere.
1080p50 might be doable, if sampling is dropped to 4:2:0.
That would be anyway about same resolution than 1080i with 4:2:2.

Hi Folks,

The PAL version of the camera will not do 1080P/50, it will do 1080P/25 and 1080i/50. As Barry pointed out, it just is not possible to capture 50 frames in 1080 and record them. Too much compression, it is an error on the European site, that stemmed from translation error. Hopefully they will correct it before too long.

Can we get another one about horizontal resolution of recorded 1080i/p-picture?

Just a hint for future development:
@100Mbps assuming 1280×1080 resolution:
1080i60@4:2:2 = 2.4b/px = 6.6 compression ratio
1080p50@4:2:0 = 1.4b/px = 8.3 compression ratio

I would see that the difference is quite small and need for 4:2:2 with progressive material is greatly reduced. So for the next model, please…
