How fast a computer do you need to capture HDV-200 footage and is firewire really fast enough?
Posted by Todd Roush on August 28, 2005 at 3:17 amCan you just capture this footage to a laptop with an external drive?
Will it need a special drive?

August 28, 2005 at 6:41 amFor “how fast”, look at the minimum system requirements for FCP-HD or Avid Express Pro HD. Both systems currently support DVCPRO-HD.
Regarding hard disks, most any external hard disk, 3.5″ size, should be easily able to handle the 12.5 megabyte/second transfer rate. Little laptop drives like 2.5″ should probably be able to handle it as well, but the tiny 1.8″ drives usually can’t.

August 29, 2005 at 2:39 pmYour question is on the expected DVCPRO HD data rates. here is a summary table:
DATA RATE FORMAT 17.1 MB/s DVCPRO HD 720p/60 8.5 MB/s DVCPRO HD 720p/30 6.8 MB/s DVCPRO HD 720p/24 17.1 MB/s DVCPRO HD 1080i/60 8.5 MB/s DVCPRO 50 4.3 MB/s DVCPRO DV practically any onboard hard drive can handle this type of single stream data rate. where a laptop may fail is in multiple streams or in capacity. you’ll need 60 GB for every hour of footage, so you may max out your internal or external drive capacity very fast.

August 29, 2005 at 2:43 pmSo would I be able to record directly into, say, the Apple 12″ ibook, or would I need a firewire 800 port?
Any further thoughts on capturing direct to laptop?
Thanks,
Harry

August 29, 2005 at 7:42 pmJan, has Panasonic been talking to Adobe at all? Can you say anything about whether Premiere 2.0 will support the P2 camera?

August 29, 2005 at 10:09 pmAnd anyway, would one be forced to use the FCP CAPTURE mode to record the footage onto a laptop? Seems a clunky way to go about it what with all that messing about while FCP “allocates disk space” etc and naming files. Is there a simpler “hit one button” way to record from the camera direct to the laptop Mac?
Any ideas out there?
Best

August 30, 2005 at 3:04 pmI don’t know if Jan can give a definite answer, but I’ve read on the Adobe forums that the “Cineform” solution might be the way you will have to handle any HD footage. This doesn’t make sense for P2 purposes, but right now it’s the only option.
