As far as I know the MAC version of Avid does not support any P2s. They may have something in Beta but he should contact Avid for that.
No problem on the PC side.

There is this problem, yes it shouldn’t be, but it does happen, the only solution has been to back up a step. If you do not have the MXF, you are totally at a loss. Lesson here is save the MXF files, always.

The MXF files are like your master tapes, not to keep them means that you have no way to go back to the original files, should you find that you have a problem. Most of the problems that have been “big” problems could have been easily resolved with a reimport from the MXF, but since there was not MXF to go back to the options become pretty ugly.
Let me finish with this question. Would you throw away your master tapes once you have the images loaded into your computer? Treat the MXF with the same due respect.

The only recommendation is that you do not ever delete the original Contents folders, these are your masters. FRom the P2 Card to an HDD and then import to either system. Keep in mind that the FCP will make a new Quicktime file out of the footage, but so be it. That should still not be reason to delete the MXF folders. The MXF is where you back up if something goes wrong.

Take a look at the Matrox Axio LE. It might still be in Beta, but you should ask them as I know they are working very hard to deliver soon.

This is not a recommended workflow. It can result in problems in the media. I have seen many a dropout caused this way. Transfer your MXF/P2 media to a HDD. Import from there. Never discard the MXF files, this is the only file format that is cross compatible at the codec level. It would be analogus to throwing awy the master footage. Your client will not be able to read the Apple QT files. This is not a format like DV, it is not univerally handled the same way.

DVCPRO/DVCPRO50/DVCPRO HD are all Panasonic Formats. DVCPRO25 is open license but the DVCPRO50 and the DVCPRO HD are not. The only requirement that we make of the licensee, like Apple or Avid, is that they see a standard file on import and that when it outputs, it outputs over 1394 a standard signal. Everthing else is propriety to the NLE system that is running the codec.

I don’t see Sony offering HDCAM or DigiBeta Codecs on their website or even the XDCAM HD or Beta SX. So no this does not work as an argument. You can try using the MainConcept DVCPRO50 codec, but I am not sure that this is going to work.

Might be just as easy to keep the master MXF files and let them use the P2 Viewer and then they can benefit from the 4:2:2 sampling that DVCPRO50 offers.

Have you tried to move the Contents folder back to the P2 card? Since I am not able to see what it looks like, I can only say that there is something that is odd or peculiar about this card and its transfer. Please follow the recommendation that I mentioned in my earlier post and let me know if it plays in the camera. If yes, then the footage is viable, and we need only to figure out why the FCP is not seeing it. It narrows the focus from two units to one.

Couple of thoughts, are the clips the same format, and for some unknown reason the camera was switched to another scene file and instead of 720 it is now 1080? Is the lastclip.txt there?
Idea: Load the Contents folder and lastclip.txt back onto the P2 card and see if it will play in the camera. If so, then bring it back to the HDD and start the troubleshooting there, but at least this will let you know exactly what format it is in.

Hi Chris,
No they won’t but there are scene files on line for the SPX900 just off the webpage for the SDX900 under resources. If you own the SDX there is a book called the Goodman’s Guide and you can have one of those for free if your camera is a US camera and hasn’t been registered before. So if you do own the SDX, then look again on the SDX site and you will find a registration card that you can fill out and we will send you a book.
Otherwise you can buy that book, like if you only rent the camera, at some of the more hip dealers out there that stock the book. There is another book like it for the VariCam.
