  • Another P2 Import problem

I copied the P2 data to an external HD during production. I made a new folder each time and named them “Camera Reel 1, 2, 3, etc.” through Reel 15. All imported fine with the usual steps into FCP 5.1.1 with the exception of Reel 7. When I use File>Import>Panasonic P2, the P2 window opens, but no files appear in the window for import. I can’t see any difference in the Reel 7 folder and any of the other folders that imported properly. When I open the Reel 7 folder in Finder, I see everything there, as it should be. Any ideas?

Couple of thoughts, are the clips the same format, and for some unknown reason the camera was switched to another scene file and instead of 720 it is now 1080? Is the lastclip.txt there?

Idea: Load the Contents folder and lastclip.txt back onto the P2 card and see if it will play in the camera. If so, then bring it back to the HDD and start the troubleshooting there, but at least this will let you know exactly what format it is in.

    Keep us posted,

    All clips were shot 720p60.

Tried to view files using ImagineProducts P2 View and Logger. The message came back “selected volume contains no valid clips,” yet I can see the clips in Finder.

Was this a bad file transfer and I’m screwed? Is there any way to save even part of this P2 volume?

If this is not recoverable, then this is a major draw back to P2 production. I can’t stop to verify every single P2 dump before resuing the P2 card to shoot more footage. When I shoot on tape, I know I have what I shot.

Have you tried to move the Contents folder back to the P2 card? Since I am not able to see what it looks like, I can only say that there is something that is odd or peculiar about this card and its transfer. Please follow the recommendation that I mentioned in my earlier post and let me know if it plays in the camera. If yes, then the footage is viable, and we need only to figure out why the FCP is not seeing it. It narrows the focus from two units to one.

    Hey Jan,
Sorry. This isn’t regarding the P2 cards, per se, but the P2 store and you seem the guy to ask. We shot a bunch of stuff this sunday and when we tried to dump the footage, 4 of the drives (cards) wouldn’t mount. We’re using a Mac and the P2 store was formatted for Mac, but when it’s plugged in to the desktop only 11 drives out of 16 show up on the desktop. The 11 that show up are all fine. No problems, the footage looks great.
Then when we went in through Apple’s Disk Utility, we can see the all the drives (including the missing ones), but when we click on one of the missing drives and “Mount Disk”, nothing happens… Also, under the info for the missing drives, it says format: Windows_Fat_16, while all the ones that show up say: MS-DOS File System.
We never changed anything while shooting, but for some reason there seems to be 2 different formats for some of the cards. How do we access those drives???

please respond via here, or even better, you can email direct with any suggestions to niccollsdp@hotmail.com
