Good to know – thanks John! I’m also just about to post a quick question up on a new system I’m looking at buying as I start doing more edits – would hugely appreciate any input if you have time. Thanks.

Thanks John. Much appreciated and that certainly gives me a far clearer picture and understanding.

Just a couple of quick questions stemming from your answers. Just so I can know a bit more about which codecs to use and why, why would you use an MPEG2 instead of an MPEG4 for DVD/Blu-Ray? How does the compression of MPEG4 compare to MPEG2?

In regards to your last point, so does this mean a reasonably fail-safe way to achieve good quality is filming in 1080P, AVCHD (because of its excellent compression), then setting the bitrate when rendering to the maximum MB that the video was captured in on camera?

Lastly (promise!), does the SD card make a difference on quality? If I film in 50MBPS, am going to render in 50MBPS, but the SD card is only 45MBPS, that means some quality will be lost?

    Thanks again.

Thanks for you help Phil. Much appreciated.

One more question, I know if you press tab you can choose whether to take both the audio and video, or just the audio or video from the trimmer to the timeline. I can’t seem to get this to work for creating a sub-clip though. I.e. is is possible to create a sub-cllip with just the audio or video from the trimmer?

Also, currently when I press enter in my project media, it automatically adds the clip to my timeline. Do you know how to stop this, as it becomes annoying when I want to pause my auto preview in the project media. Instead of pausing, it adds the video to the timeline haha.

    Thanks again!

    Hi John,

Would you be able to assist in my problem in an earlier thread? It’s a few below this one. I would really appreciate it and if you need further info I’m happy to provide. 🙂

    Thanks!

  • Hi, I don’t suppose anyone has a solution to this?

    Thanks. 🙂

  • Thanks Phil.

I just don’t like using the A key to insert straight to the timeline. A lot of my editing is putting video to a soundtrack already in the timeline. If I go straight from the trimmer into the timeline then it’s hard to judge the correct amount of video needed in each section to properly fill the soundtrack. It’s just easier to pick and choose pre-edited clips.

Do you have any idea about my explorer issue and not being able to see the media in the folder?

    Thanks!

  • Definitely some useful information in the other thread, thanks.

I think I’ve found the solution to my second question. Once I create a subclip in the trimmer, I then click alt + right arrow to move to the frame following the subclip I’ve just created. I can then hit enter and keep playing my footage without having to re-watch anything. I’m amazed I need to do this though. Is there nothing in preferences to allow me to continue playing my footage from the frame following the subclip I’ve just created?

And of course the problem then becomes, you cannot extend a subclip in the timeline. This would mean when I see a clip I might consider using, I would need to select a little bit of extra footage on either side. It all seems a bit non-user-friendly to be honest. 🙁

Surely there has to be a way that I can store sub-clips in the Project Media window that I can also extend and shorten if need be when I get them on the timeline… Because of the editing I do I need all my sub-clips created before I begin editing. Editing footage and having subclips at the end of the timeline is not an option either as it just gets messy scrolling back-and-forth. You also end up deleting clips by accident when you’re ctl+z’ing so much!
