I should clarify – there isn’t heaps of quality loss, but there is enough that it is noticeable

So unfortunately there was still quite a bit of quality loss… I’ll have a play with some of the settings

Any other templates that I should try?

I used 1080p so I’ll go for 15mb and see what the files size ends up like – presumably something similar to the original which is fine.

    Thanks John

How can I determine the source bitrate?

The new formats are a welcome addition to Vegas and editing is so much easier without proxy files.

John if I was wanting to export the 1080p 29.97fps gopro footage at the highest possible delivery format what would you suggest?

I’m having troubles exporting it to blu ray as the main formats for that appear to be interlaced – which the footage isn’t or 24p which again it isn’t.

The file is intended to be played back through a computer so ultimately the final format isn’t relevant, just the quality.

Thanks John. I was thinking about trying that tonight so I’ll give it a go. The majority of the footage is PAL and the other cameras are used for a specific purpose. The gopro is a tiny waterproof sports camera which can be mounted on cars, skies, heads, you name it. The 5d needs no introduction but I’m using it for its depth of field

January 13, 2011 at 11:02 pm in reply to: Sony Vegas Pro – Velocity Rendering

    Hi Guys

Sorry for not posting back sooner, and thanks very much for the advice. Especially Jerry for his detailed response. I have tried your method Jerry but the results are ‘unpredictable’ so to speak and didn’t give the desired result. Interestingly enough – I added a velocity envelop to a DIFFERENT piece of footage as a test and it rendered as expected.

John – I’m not expecting Vegas to provide crystal clear frames – but I am expecting it to provide some level of blending. As you can’t see the footage I can only explain that on another piece of footage slowed to the same extent I get a nice blending effect from vegas – it just seems for some reason (a bug perhaps) that it will not work on this piece of footage in Vegas (both from the same camera).

I’ve also deleted and reimported the footage only to get the same result. I’ve stopped short of creating a new project and importing the footage because at this stage it’s purely academic as I’m going to use After Effects from now on.

Odd behavior and one that I hope I don’t see again as it took quite some time to get the velocity right.

The workaround for now is to use time remapping in After Effects, which seems to be able to provide the correct result.

  • Fotis, excellent advice.

I tested these settings today and the result is great. The interlacing is barely apparent, unlike previous tests where the interlace artefacts were massive. The render is also significantly faster as no de-interlacing is taking place. That template results in a large file however, around about 200meg for each minute of video. Is there another format I could render in for HD delivery. I have approx 40 mins of footage and am happy to fill up a 8.5 gig DVD with one video file. The render you have recommended above actually fits this criteria, but I know in future that the videos could be longer, up to 90 mins so I want to know if there is a better compression codec and what template to use.

I have used the MainConcept MP4 template with some success already, I believe this is H.264, which is one of the better delivery codecs if I am correct.

  • Right, well is there anything you can recommend? Also I should mention that I am using PAL 50i footage. I am interested in looking into any filter and software options you can recommend, or if anybody has any satisfactory Vegas settings for 50i footage.

What version of Vegas are you using? I am using Vegas 8 Pro and have used both Upshift and Gearshift on AVCHD without issues.

I’m only new to NLE’s but is it possible codecs you have installed are interfering with Vegas in some way?

What settings are you using when your create the upshift, I will replicate and test. Another option is to post a small section of the video somewhere and we can also test that, to see if the problem is file or computer specific
