Nothing special about editing GoPro Hero files. It’s usually best to make your project match the media settings. This can be done on the Project Properties window like this:

Render to YouTube as Sony AVC with the Internet 1280×720-30p template. Render to DVD using MainConcept MPEG2 using the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream for video and as Dolby Digital AC3 with the Stereo DVD template for audio.

Thanks for the tips John ! Seems like I’d read in one of the forums something about using proxy files & gear shift since the Hero HD files are h.264. Then again , I’d also read , just drop the files on the timeline & edit like always . I’ll put it to the test this weekend , when I do the first shoot with this camera. I’d also like to thank you for helping me out with HDV settings 1 year ago , they worked perfectly .

If you have Vegas Pro 9 or earlier, I would use proxies with GearShift or CineForm intermediaries. If you have Vegas Pro 10 you can just drop them on the timeline. That’s why you read conflicting reports. Vegas Pro 10 added support for more h.264 formats.

The new formats are a welcome addition to Vegas and editing is so much easier without proxy files.

John if I was wanting to export the 1080p 29.97fps gopro footage at the highest possible delivery format what would you suggest?

I’m having troubles exporting it to blu ray as the main formats for that appear to be interlaced – which the footage isn’t or 24p which again it isn’t.

The file is intended to be played back through a computer so ultimately the final format isn’t relevant, just the quality.

I would render as Sony AVC using the Internet 16:9 HD 30p template and change the frame size to 1920×1080. Also increase the bit-rate until it matches the source.

Read the manual on the GoPro Hero HD camera. Here is what their web site says:

HD Video Resolution Modes: (subject to change, pending final firmware release)
1080p = 1920×1080 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate
960p = 1280×960 pixels (4:3), 30 fps, 12 Mbit/s data rate
720p = 1280×720 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate
720p = 1280×720 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate
WVGA = 848×480 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate

I used 1080p so I’ll go for 15mb and see what the files size ends up like – presumably something similar to the original which is fine.

Sounds like a plan. Then save the preset so that you just need to select it the next time and not have to tweak any of the parameters again. Let us know how you make out.
