  • I’ve had this intermittent glitch since version 3.5, if you close the bin then open it again it goes back to highlighting the name again.

The method I use has nothing to do with not liking the .new because as you say you can change it to anything you like. It’s solely to keep things organised, if I have to transcode/consol lots of bins overnight instead of bringing one bin in at a time I do it this way. The relink just means they’re are in the bin I want them to be in ithout having to manually move clips back. I’ve used this method on countless jobs and have never had a problem working this way.

You could use Sorenson Squeeze on one (or more) of your other machines to free up the Avid, but if you want to transcode multiple bins within Avid over night the best way is to create a new bin and alt drag all of the clips from all the different AMA cards to this bin. You can then transcode these clips all in one go, then go back to each of the individual bins and relink the clips so that you keep your file structure intact.

If you drag the mmob file from any folder in within the avid mediafiles folder into a bin, avid will populate the bin with all clips it contains.

If you want to quickly check the folder though you should try and open them in VLC, I find it works about 95% of the time and whilst its not the smoothest way to view MXF’s it’s usually good enough for a quick check.

  • Create new tracks solely for the music bed and keep the sync lock on the rest of the tracks.

  • There isn’t a way to do it as you suggest (I don’t think?) and I don’t know what you would benefit by having it work that way as it’s easier to do all of those actions with key commands than moving the mouse to the the monitors. When in trim mode I find very little reason to use the mouse by having commands set up for trim left/right/move to next edit etc. Than activating/de-activating ripple or overwrite isn’t a problem as my hands are already on the keyboard.

I guess what you would need is a modifier key such as holding alt whilst clicking on the left or right monitor causing ripple and not pressing causes overwrite. Maybe you could set this up with a 3rd party keyboard macro/hotkey app.

  • You can also use automatic duck’s media copy

    https://www.automaticduck.com/products/mc/index.html

It reads your project and finds all associated mxf’s and copies them to where you want them.

Hi, the file cant be found.

Are you bringing in a stereo file? If so what are your audio settings, tracks centred or alt L/R? If your tracks are centred you could be having phasing issues.

In FCP the length of the clip changes in relation to the speed change where as Avid keeps the clip length the same and changes the out point of the source but the clips duration on timeline is fixed.

The normal approach is to have the clips with the the speed changes duped at the the end of the line and extended to the duration you require, then you can add the speed changes during the online or if you’re conforming back in Avid just drop them back on.

How much of the edit has speed changes? You could remove all the effects and export an AAF with enough handle length to accommodate the speed changes.

Ah, the old DRM! I thought I read somewhere that apple had stopped using DRM on itunes? I don’t tend to buy anything from itunes but it’s good to have a heads up if the need ever arises!
