September 11, 2015 at 1:25 pm in reply to: “Why I like Premiere Pro” – looking for serious discussionAnother shout out for the customisable UI, it might not be a sexy feature as such but it makes things so much easier to have a workspace of all the main things that I use 90% of the time laid out exactly as I want them.

[Dan Stewart] “Avid is for cutting. Just.. cutting. On every other front it’s outflanked.
“I always find this an interesting statement when it comes to Avid, I’m not going to overstate it’s ability to do FX work but there are many occasions when I’ve done pretty heavy comp work within Avid that I just couldn’t do within another NLE.
For example, I’ve cut many fashion promo’s on media composer that require retouching and by using a combination of paint tool and animatte have been able to do a lot of (if not all of) it within media composer, now that most of the ad agencies have switched to Adobe all of this work has to be round tripped from Premiere to AE – I’ve tried to do it within premiere but it’s more trouble than it’s worth and i think Adobe wants you to send that sort of work to AE anyway.
But even if you stand by the statement that Avid is just for cutting, that’s not such a bad thing as from a pure cutting standpoint it’s still (imho) the best and I can’t emphasise how much i miss the trim tools when using premiere (which I’ve been pretty much exclusively for the past 6 months).
Titles on the other hand have sucked in media composer since I can remember! 🙂

August 6, 2015 at 10:16 am in reply to: Render from Media Encoder does not match the look in Premiere ProNo worries, I always make sure that’s unchecked as you get quite a lot of problems with media encoder not updating the sequence, for example, if you change fonts on a title media encoder will still export with the old font.

August 5, 2015 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Render from Media Encoder does not match the look in Premiere ProIn Media Encoder preferences there is a dialogue box under the heading ‘Premiere Pro’ called ‘import sequences natively’. Uncheck this box then send your sequence to Media Encoder.

To me the title still seems right as that is still the view in London (where I work). I know a lot has been said about the BBC using X for news but I am yet to work in a post house or creative agency that is using it. And the overriding view still seems to be (rightly or wrongly) that it’s not a professional tool.
Another good thing about the forum name is that it stokes passion and I find it great to read when someone posts X can’t do xyz and some vehemently defends X and shows them how to do it. If it was just FCP the discussion things would just turn boring, just look at us over at the Avid forum 😉

March 26, 2015 at 12:41 pm in reply to: Exporting from Avid 8 to a reasonabily sized fileChoosing your own bit rate gives you more flexibility, the high, best setting etc are quick but you normally end up with a bigger file but with the same quality that can be achieved at a lower file size. You can export 30 sec sections at different bit rates to give you an idea of how large the 8 minute version would be but tbh it’s much easier and quicker to go through squeeze to encode an h.264.
QuickTime ref is only necessary if you’re going to encode outside of avid.
