I could see FCPX being faster at organizing footage with metadata but I also don’t like the idea. I bought FCPX and gave it a chance when it came down to using it I was still waiting on the background rendering to complete for the footage to be usable. I looked at MC5 but not being 64bit yet and since I already had Premiere with the suite I was able import FCP7 projects and edit without transcoding video in real time.

Plus switching from the events bin thingy to the timeline where it was scrubbing things I didn’t want it to was annoying. It needs 2 viewers!

I don’t see Apple adding things back in but relying on 3rd parties to fill in the gaps which is fine for somethings/people but I see problems down the road when something goes wrong with a plugin or FCPX then it becomes a blaming game between Apple and the third party why its crashing, breaking or just isn’t working. Example: just like Windows and 3 party hardware drivers To be fare I’ve switched to Win7 and its working great.

Its junk, I gave it shot and it failed and failed miserably the background rendering is a joke! It worked great with DSLR footage but it sucked with AVCHD which premiere handle as is! It still had to render to be usable and even once it was render I couldn’t scrub the timeline without it stuttering in spots when I stop playback it was a solid green screen so I and to nudge it a frame or two see the video in the viewer. I didn’t even add effects or transition yet.

To be fare there was one thing that it had that was great and that was ……..wait there wasn’t anything.

Adobe and Edius got it right edit any footage without transcoding and in real-time.

Funny story every year there is a Convention in the Dallas area called the “Texas Production Roundup” I was talking to some the area “Pros” and they were laughing that I was using Premiere Pro in stead of waiting for FCPX. I switched to Premiere and back to Windows in April 2010 at home because I was using a date MacPro and didn’t want to wait for FCPX.

They had a preview of FCPX at the convention everyone was cheering to see a slide show of a product and with no actually demo. Now forward fast forward to present day most everyone that was laughing is switching and calling/emailing me on how to use it.

If you place the cursor of over the scroll bar the wheel will work. Doesn’t make sense but that’s how it works in Premiere at this time.

Also use “~” key on the timeline works great for seeing everything

Here is the link to the hack.

Your video card has to be a Nvidia Chip and at least 1GB ram.

There has to be an issue somewhere because with those systems it shouldn’t be an issue.

I would check the drivers for your Quadro because that card should make it fly. Even without the Quardro you shouldn’t have an issue editing 7D footage.

I get a red or yellow bar without transcoding AVCHD 1080p videos to more usable format but it plays back with effects (include ultra key scenes) in real-time without issues. I can’t even use the GPU mercury playback because my videocard doesn’t have enough ram and I’m able to edit without issues.

I’ve basically ignore the color bar unless it starts to stutter but that hasn’t been the case but rare few times. If its starts to stutter you might have to render the effects but if you have Hardware Mercury you shouldn’t have to worry about it much.

I tried AVCHD with FCPX and it still needed to render it and even once it rendered it was useless to edit with because of the shuttering. I was getting a green screen when scrubbing.

Premiere Pro has been so awesome at editing every native format I’ve thrown at with out an issue. This how FCP7 replacement should of been and no need of rendering anything.

Make sure your Quadro has 1GB video memory or more or it won’t work. I made the mistake of ordering a card with 512Mbs and it won’t work. Some say it will work with 700MB+ but just to be save make sure it has a gig or more.

  • When I used to work for FX firm in 2001 the would always send me a tiff sequence from After Effects. When I asked why they said it produced high quality outputs but that was 2001.
Since it was only 10sec clip I recommended it because I assumed it was the quality coming into Premiere wasn’t high enough to produce higher quality output.

I’ve just started to use After Effects again and first time with Premiere.

Since it seems to be a Premiere Output issue have you tried different codec for output?
