  • Former FCP user with a few questions…

Posted by Chris Cea on July 11, 2011 at 3:46 pm

HI All, I’m a new Premiere user coming over from FCP, I was hoping to tap into the knowledge base here. Heres my deal..

I’ve done some searching on this forum and I was looking for confirmation that when using a capture card you must use the capture card sequence presets to get playback to a broadcast monitor. One of the things that confused me was that when I drag footage (say h.264 material) into a sequence that is created based on that footage, I get the yellow bar. While if I use a Blackmagic preset, I get the red bar. Is this a problem? I guess what I’m asking is, If I always want to use the Broadcast monitor to see the output of my sequence… Would I ever want to choose a sequence setting outside of the Blackmagic presets?

The other question I had is related to DNxHD material. I recently took delivery of some DNxHD media files. I am unable to see this media in Premiere even after I have downloaded the DNxHD codec from the Avid site. This DNxHD material does display properly in Quicktime ad FCP7. Any ideas on what I may have done wrong here and why Premiere won’t display this media?

    Thanks for your help
    Chris

The yellow bar is normal. Green only happens when you actually preview rendered something. Red usually indicates a native format mismatch…which still isn’t always a deal breaker. I’ve edited timelines covered in red for years…the content shows up and many workstations, it will also run at framerate. It’s dependent on your system.

As far as BlackMagic is concerned…these third party vendors keep advancing as the software keeps updating (relative to FCP, Premiere Pro has been upgrading/updating nearly non-stop for the last two years…).

You’ll need a BlackMagic sequence to use the BM card’s outputs. i know that AJA has recently updated their drivers and vastly improved the playback performance in AJA sequences, I’d have to believe that Black Magic is not sitting idly by…

I get a red or yellow bar without transcoding AVCHD 1080p videos to more usable format but it plays back with effects (include ultra key scenes) in real-time without issues. I can’t even use the GPU mercury playback because my videocard doesn’t have enough ram and I’m able to edit without issues.

I’ve basically ignore the color bar unless it starts to stutter but that hasn’t been the case but rare few times. If its starts to stutter you might have to render the effects but if you have Hardware Mercury you shouldn’t have to worry about it much.

I tried AVCHD with FCPX and it still needed to render it and even once it rendered it was useless to edit with because of the shuttering. I was getting a green screen when scrubbing.

Premiere Pro has been so awesome at editing every native format I’ve thrown at with out an issue. This how FCP7 replacement should of been and no need of rendering anything.

    HI Tim and Jacob,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I too have become a fan of Premiere. So many amazing features. Adobe really doesn’t get the credit it deserves in the pro video world.

As for the colors that show up above the clips… I hear ya. I was just a little put off at first when I saw the Black Magic Sequence (which gives me Broadcast monitoring capability) had a red bar while if I created a sequence based on the actual footage it was a yellow. What you say about ignoring the red bar makes sense though. As Tim did mention..
I will keep my eyes open for a Black Magic update in the future, maybe that red will be a yellow in no time.

Do either of you guys have any input on the whole DNxHD question?? Codec is downloaded. DNxHD footage runs in FCP but for some reason I see and hear nothing while importing it into Premiere.

    Thanks again guys
    Chris

[Chris Cea] “Adobe really doesn’t get the credit it deserves in the pro video world. “

There are a few of us that have been ridiculed for saying exactly that… 🙂

Sorry about the DNxHD thing…I inadvertently left that out.

I’m wondering about how Adobe is dealing with QT on the Mac platform. They had to create a 64 bit “frame server” type thing on Windows to get 32 bit QT to work with a 64 bit editing app, but I am not very knowledgeable on what they may be facing on the Apple side of the fence. I’ve wondered aloud in a couple other threads if QTX has some little glitches yet? Or…if third party codecs maybe need revision to be compatible with the new media foundation?

Do you have both QT 7.x and QTX on the machine?

    Hey Tim,

Adobe works hard to put out a solid product and for some odd reason people don’t take it seriously. Nobody seems to joke about Photoshop or AE… In my mind Premiere should be treated the same. This latest release is killer. When FCPX was released and many posters here on the Cow were considering jumping ship it shocked me to see people up in the air as to which way to go. The answer seemed pretty obvious to me…. Adobe Premiere !!! And the kicker of the whole thing… most of these posters already owned Premiere. Not really sure why there was (and in some cases continues to be) so much confusion. I will say there was a side of me that thought maybe Adobe should have re-branded Premiere, maybe give it a new name and promote the hell out of it when it became 64 bit. It’s possible that would have helped shed this silly negative impression some people have of it. Either way though, I am happy with it.

Anyway, as for your question about QT… I don’t have 7 installed. Only X, and the DNxHD does play back in Quicktime X. Your thinking that maybe having 7 installed might allow Premiere to work with this codec?

I will hopefully install QT7 tonight . I will let you know how it goes.

    Thanks again for chiming in
    Chris

[Chris Cea] “Your thinking that maybe having 7 installed might allow Premiere to work with this codec?”

I need to be clear…I am reaching beyond my direct experience…but knowing how old the DNxHD codec is, how hard Adobe had to work to get old QuickTime to be useable, and the new Media Foundation is…really new…it couldn’t hurt to check I guess.

    But…I’m troubleshooting at this point.

Funny story every year there is a Convention in the Dallas area called the “Texas Production Roundup” I was talking to some the area “Pros” and they were laughing that I was using Premiere Pro in stead of waiting for FCPX. I switched to Premiere and back to Windows in April 2010 at home because I was using a date MacPro and didn’t want to wait for FCPX.

They had a preview of FCPX at the convention everyone was cheering to see a slide show of a product and with no actually demo. Now forward fast forward to present day most everyone that was laughing is switching and calling/emailing me on how to use it.

    FYI

With the latest beta of the Blackmagic driver, I no longer get a red line for Canon DSLR H264 footage using the Blackmagic preset. In fact, its totally realtime. No bar at all.
