John, Jon, Jacob and Tim… A simple question about the audio meter within Premiere… My meter shows levels while playing down the timeline. That works great.

The meter doesn’t move while playing the source monitor and I can’t get it to show any audio while capturing through the BlackMagic card. I am confident the system is connected properly since I can capture within FCP 7 and I do see levels within FCP. I’m guessing I am doing something wrong here. Any ideas???

    As always, Thanks guys

I see levels in CS5 and CS5.5 when capturing DV and HDV but I must say it makes no difference. The levels are locked into capturing as they are so seeing them makes no difference really.

Source Monitor doesn’t currently show the levels. It is locked to the program monitor, which is the timeline.

    – Feature Request 🙂

Here are the nitty-gritty details of what the red, yellow, and green render bars mean.

    Thanks Jon,

What you say about about levels not making a difference during a digital format capture makes sense. I completely understand that. My specific situation deals more with analog (actually old VHS) capture into Premiere and I am running the audio through a Mackie Mixer before it gets to the Blackmagic Card.

From my experience with Media Composer years ago, I could swear levels could be monitored during analog capture. I know that FCP for example won’t show your levels jumping during the actual capture but levels are shown while the capture tool is open so you at least know your system is receiving the audio from your deck. In Premiere, I am seeing no audio levels within the Premiere interface while I am capturing or even before I hit the capture button. Just as a side note… Audio is in fact being captured since I can play back the captured clip and hear it. Now I do realize Premiere is not FCP or MC but it seems like this particular feature should be in their somewhere. Any ideas??

If this is in fact the way it is and incoming audio cannot be monitored, I will definitely put in a a feature request. That is a good suggestion Jon. 🙂

    Many Thanks Jon
    Chris

[Jacob Kerns] “They had a preview of FCPX at the convention everyone was cheering to see a slide show of a product and with no actually demo. Now forward fast forward to present day most everyone that was laughing is switching and calling/emailing me on how to use it.”

That is the case for many of us I suspect. It certainly is here. i have a dozen people in my immediate circle of associates all switching to Adobe. It’s tough to get any work done…

    HI Todd,

Thanks for that link. Explains a lot.

Todd, Any Idea why a DNxHD clip won’t play in Premiere? I have of course downloaded the codec from the Avid. I believe it was Tim that suggested I download QT 7 since all I had was X but that doesn’t seem to solve my problem. I get nothing but Black (with no audio) in Premiere when I import the DNxHD clip. Mind you, I can import this same clip into FCP 7 and it runs fine. I must be doing something wrong here, I just can’t figure it out.

Also… I had asked about the audio meter showing levels during analog capture. I am using a Decklink Extreme 3D card. Should my audio meter be showing my incoming audio signal when I have the capture tool open? Again, I seem to think I am doing something wrong. I am using CS5 by the way, on a Mac Pro 12 core.

Many thanks for your help Todd

Same here. I’m a bit embarrassed to say it but I can’t help but feel a bit vindicated now that pro users see how well Premiere has matured over the years. I have been scoffed at many times in the past for using PPro for real TVC online editing environment. I truly hope the 3rd party vendors see that too and start developing some serious plugins for PPro which were previously only available on FCP7.

So as not to be off topic Chris, I too am using the BMD cards and I believe that the audio meters do not move/update during capture/loop through of audio. It used to update back in the Matrox Digisuite days, but stopped once I moved to the BMD hardware. I think you should be asking this question in the BMD forum.

    HTH.
