I was going from the Rob Redman tutorial on using normals maps to create better textures.

Every time I use Cinema to export to a a normals map in the multipass section, I get a black document instead of the usual wacky coloured / pinkish normals map…..

Do I not need to produce these normals maps to improve my texturing?

Are they very different from bump maps?

    Cheers….

    oh right……HA! 🙂

As he’s a fan, I’ve emailed John Dickinson about this one. Will share if he sheds any light on it……

Yeah, in part it is. But it’s nice to see someone create whole worlds with 3D. I find a lot of 3D quite cold and devoid of any personal / organic feel.

Do you know what I mean? I’m not saying if you use primitives in your work, you’re rubbish. I’m miles away from producing anything remotely organic in my 3D work. It’s just nice to see someone who uses 3D in such a beautiful, inspirational way.

Yeah, I hear you mate! 🙂

But he looks at least in mid forties, so the guy has been doing it a while. Check out the interview with him on motionworks.com.au Also, it’s just nice to grab ideas from him, even if it’s something small. Baby steps!….. 🙂 I’m more sick of seeing sphere’s all over the place. That depresses me more than anything!

When you see something unique and ethereal that’s been made with that programme, it gives me a little hope that you can create some really wonderful stuff with C4D that looks really organic.

Thanks for the info……will definitely check that one out at Pariah….

    take care David……

Yes definitely, there must be a few ways. I first went down the road of splines and nerbs, but I think what you achieved with the modified sphere hits the nail on the head. Thanks for sharing!

you’ve got a lot of lathe nerbs and things going on there. But going straight from a sphere worked best?

Would you be able to share the techniques you used to achieve the shape in the hypernerbs? 🙂

I’m new to modeling as I’m sure you can see, and would really appreciate the details of the steps.

    Many thanks 🙂
