You can use FCP’s Timecode Reader/Generator filters or the BigTime plugin.

Did you recapture the tape? Just to exclude that the VTR’s playback has given up.

You mean FCP’s timecode overlay?You can turn it off, there is a dropdown menu at the top of the canvas window.

If some Motion tabs were set in the process that may cause the need to render. Select the clip and Remove Attributes.

The sequence: aspect ratio may stil be an issue.
The desktop preview: full screen gives artefacts – but there is also a 1:1option

Are you watching Digital cinema desktop? Don’t set it to full screen.
Is your QT interlaced? And your sequence?

Have a look at your sequence settings. Are they the same as your QT? Resolution, framerate, etc.
