  • Distorted Audio when outputting to tape

I’m hoping someone can help me with a problem playing out to tape.

I’m trying to output a project onto a mini-dv cassette with my “VTR” cassette deck (Sony HVR-M10U). The video comes out fine, but for some reason the audio is severely distorted, very loud and completely scrambled (you can barely hear the original audio. The audio is so terribly grating, you’d kill yourself if you had to listen to it for more than a few minutes). What is strange is that it was working fine just yesterday. I tried resetting the VTR device, I’ve restarted the computer and hard drives, I’ve reconnected and rerendered, I’ve tried with different projects, but I keep getting this terrible distortion. I’m not sure if the problem is in FCP or the VTR.

I’d greatly appreciate it if anyone has any ideas or advice.

Did you recapture the tape? Just to exclude that the VTR’s playback has given up.

How did you connect to the deck for picture & audio?

How are you monitoring the playback?

Thanks for your questions. I was connected with firewire 6 to 4 pin and monitoring through the headphone jack on the deck.

I finally figured out the problem with the help of someone at apple. It was apparently interference somehow from the firewire cable going to the external hard drives. I shut everything down, turned everything off, the hard drives too, unplugged the hard drives, restarted the computer, then tried opening a final cut project using a quicktime file on my laptop and the output to the VTR worked fine. Then I reconnected the hard drives and everything is working fine with them too — for now.
The apple guy said this happens sometimes, the hard drives give some kind of interference going through the other firewire port. He recommended using eSATA to avoid this.
