If I understand correctly, the choice of codec will not impact GPU acceleration. Although the words rendering and encoding are often used interchangeably, it is important to make the distinction because GPU acceleration only affects rendering–the internal processing of effects to create a composed sequence–and only for a subset of effects. That leads to three points:
– When comparing different codecs, the total encoding times may vary but the rendering time within Premiere Pro should not change.
– The impact of GPU acceleration depends on the extent to which GPU-enabled effects are applied within a Premiere Pro sequence. There should not be any affect when simply transcoding a DPX master file without rescaling.
– The final aspect is whether the Quadro cards provide any advantages compared to GeForce. I have not conducted any tests, but other posters have commented that GeForce is either roughly equivalent, or at least a better value for video production.

– Are you trying to get a file smaller than 2.5GB, or are you asking for recommendations on how to compress the 15.42GB ProRes file with better quality than your 2.5GB H.264 file?
– What were your export settings?
– Do you have specific requirements for the encoded file (resolution, bitrate, media player, etc.)? Where and how will the video be displayed?
– Please describe the losses of quality observed in the H.264 file. Posting screen captures would be helpful.
– What media player was used to view the H.264 file? Some of the quality issues might be related to the media player (especially if using QuickTime).
From the initial post is seems your H.264 file has a data rate of about 18 Mbps. This should produce a good quality 1920×1080 video, but it is about half the rate of Blu-ray. Try increasing the bitrate setting to 30-35 Mbps with Main or High Profile @ Level 4.1 or 5.0. Note: I am not familiar with iMedia Converter and the level of control it provides. If this is a professional project, consider licensing a copy of Apple Compressor for better integration with FCP. Depending on how compressed you need to make the encoded file, it might also be helpful to install the x264 codec.

In general, reduce the target bitrate, increase key frame distance to 1-2 times the frame rate (or set it to auto), and use a higher profile to improve quality:bitrate. What codec and export settings did you use?

Start by verifying whether the problem is related to the preview settings. First, check that the playback quality is set to 1/1 in the lower right corner of the program monitor. If that does not resolve the issue, export a short test clip at high bitrate.

Consider using custom settings instead of the iPod preset. For example, exporting your 16:9 video as 640×360 requires lower bitrate than 640×480.
A 10-minute 100MB file will have a total data rate of approximately 1300 kbps including audio and overhead. I have been able to get good quality 640×360-30p video with a total bitrate of 1250kbps using the following settings in QuickTime Pro:
– MP4
– H.264
– 640×360
– 24/25/30fps as required
– Baseline profile
– Single pass
– 1080 kbps average bitrate
– Auto key frame distance
– AAC audio at 160 kbps (128 kbps should work well, too)
– Streaming enabled if required; file size is smaller when disabledThese settings should work on most mobile devices. Encode a short test file to check, though.

So they are ready to be put back into premiere pro and haven’t lost any quality?Depending on which codecs are available and the dimensions of your sequence, ProRes, DNxHD, AVC-Intra, GoPro Cineform, or uncompressed DPX are good choices. The 4:4:4 varieties are lower risk, but might be overkill depending on your requirements. PNG and JPEG2000 image sequences are viable alternatives but have higher risk of color conversion artifacts. Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 YUV is another option.
Regardless of the codec, it is a good idea to check your footage in the YC Waveform and RGB Parade scopes to ensure all levels are between 0-100 IRE. Otherwise, out-of-range values might be clamped during the encoding process.

The Spectral Noise Reduction effect can filter three different frequencies. Apply multiple instances if there are more to be addressed.

If the frequencies aren’t too intermingled you could apply a Notch filter. Use the Spectral Noise Reduction effect to identify the problem areas. It will be easier to see and fix the issue in Audition.
If filtering out the cough noticeably changes the quality of the voice track, consider adding some background music or other audio effects over this general portion of the interview.

I agree with Drew’s comments.
For reference, fitting a one hour movie into 4.7GB requires a total average bitrate around 10 Mbps including audio. With this rate H.264 will yield excellent quality at 854×480, good to very good quality at 1280×720, and moderate to low quality at 1920×1080. Consider that Blu-ray is encoded at 35-40 Mbps.
If a larger storage medium like a USB drive or SD card is not practical, try encoding at a lower resolution and upscale the image upon playback. Also, consider using 25 or 30 fps if your source footage is 50 or 60 fps. I have gotten good results using QuickTime to encode 1280×720-30p H.264 video at 10 Mbps. Quality will be better, though, with an encoder that supports H.264 High Profile.
Alternatively, if the intent of the original post was to create a DVD using the MPEG2-DVD codec, then, no, you will not get HD quality at SD resolution. However, you can get an excellent looking DVD.
