  • An all I-frame, unconstrained bitrate H.264 would be the next step down; you can think of it as an 8-bit 4-2-0 version of ProRes. Taking it one step further would be high bitrate IBP or IBBP H.264. There is minimal visual difference compared to all I-frame, but the bit rate will be lower. Ultimately, though, I would try to find a way to make ProRes work.

Create a new 720×720 project and import the current 1080 project or the source clips, as appropriate.

Create a 720×720 sequence and insert the 1080 clip. Scale and position as desired.

Alex, tho might be tangential to your question, but here are two recommendations that I didn’t see mentioned in your workflow:

    • Calibrate the monitor.
    • Check the color-corrected footage with the scopes. Especially note the RGB values because it is possible to have legal luma with one or two RGB channels out of range.

    Hope this helps.

Please search the forums for “YouTube quality”.

  • In addition to the previous recommendations, consider using the Noise effect if your grain image isn’t working on the white areas.

I would try it both ways, but suspect it will look better at the frame rate of the automobile footage. If you are not satisfied with the repeated frame Premiere Pro adds to the 25fps footage, use AE to interpolate new frames.

[Adam Cohen] “The file type has to be mpg with the video being h.264 at 720×480 widescreen and the audio being AC3.”

There is a problem with your spec because mpg is H.262. Otherwise, the tools you mentioned should be able to perform the conversion.

If there isn’t much animation or video try increasing key frame distance to 90-120 frames (or longer), increase maximum bit rate, and use multi-pass encoding. If the slides are all static (text and images only) also try reducing frame rate to maybe 6-10 fps.

What export settings are you using? It would be helpful if you posted a screen capture.

Have you verified whether the issue is with the file or the media player?
