“Layer/Duplicate Layer” choose document from drop down in dialogue box.

The pen tool would be essential, imo, to making these shapes. If you want to use Illustrator to create, spend some time with the pen tool.

Just import the PSD file into AE. If your subject has been cutout there should be no need to worry about alpha channels. If there is an alpha channel AE will usually recognize it.

Duplicate the PSD, resize it and then flatten it. Your text should hold up then.

Is the file a PSD or are you working with a flattened image? In other words, are you flattening the image and then resizing it?

True DOF doesn’t look like gaussian blur. It has polygonal shapes in it. Is this not what you are getting?

Try adding a subtle vignette to the footage. This helps to blend the edges into the screen. Adjust the opacity based upon the footage but don’t use much.
