Can PC version open Mac AE files?

Yes, as long as the extension is on the end of the Mac file the PC will open it. PC to Mac is seamless.

burn CD-R to iso 9660 and both pc and mac can read disk and run AE files.

As far as avi not opening on a mac try perian, its a component for quicktime that allows it to plays more media types.
