did you recently download v 3.0 of the U1 software? can you let me know from where? i ask because we have not posted on the US site yet and I’m wondering if there’s an issue with the version that you have.

is it just FCP-exported files or all files that give this error? can you tell me the OS, U1 driver and firmware versions (you can find the U1 info in the Device Info screen of the Utility app)?

Hi Paul-

The NXCAM files are actually quite small. When you import to FCP it does an automatic conversion to ProRes 422, which takes the 24 Mbps files and turns them into 200+ Mbps files. It’s normal for the conversion to increase the file size by almost 10x.

We can’t do much about the processing time. Make sure you are using 7.0.3 if your clips have PCM audio. There was a bug in previous versions of FCP that caused files with non-Dolby audio to take roughly 10x longer than normal to convert due to errors reading/processing the uncompressed audio.

FCP X creates smaller files in less time as it only re-wraps to QuickTime and does not convert the video.

On the 1500:

TCG = SDI
Preset/Regen = TC
Run mode = Rec Run

If you feed HDSDI from the EX30 to the HD1500 with these settings the 1500 will pick up the embedded TC on the SDI.

You cannot record to off the shelf data drives. You need a recordable HDD such as the HVR-DR60, FireStore FS4 etc. These are designed to take the video stream and encode it to a file. An ordinary HDD has no way of doing this. I think your friend may have had a computer in between the camera and the drive, as that’s really the only way to record to a standard drive. The manual says you can record to i.LINK compatible devices but a standard external HDD would not fall into this category.

I’m little unclear on how the clips got corrupted. You were transferring from the SxS to a drive or from a recordable drive to your PC? If they’re really and truly corrupt (gibberish-y file names, broken file/folder structure etc) and you don’t have the original media, then commercial data recovery is the way to go. If you just need to rebuild the data structure and have intact .mp4 files, you may be able to rebuild with Clip Browser. Note that all XDCAM EX devices utilize the Fat32 file system, so there is a max file size of 4 GB. Longer clips get broken into segmented or ‘spanned’ clips (i.e. they play as one clip and import as one clip but are really comprised of multiple files on the card, all joined by an SMI document in the TAKR folder).

Try trashing your FCP preferences (user/library/preferences) if you have not already. If you are using any version of Browser with FCP 7 you should see the “Import–> Sony XDCAM Browser” option. Also make sure FCP lives in the default directory (/Applications).

You need to use XDCAM Browser, not XDCAM Transfer. They’re different applications. (XDCAM Browser will eventually replace both XDCAM Transfer and XDCAM EX Clip Browser.) Transfer unfortunately does not support SD-AVI files.

If you have both XDCAM Transfer and XDCAM Browser on the same Mac, you’ll see two different Import–>XDCAM options in the FILE menu, “Import Sony XDCAM” and “Import Sony XDCAM Browser.” Select the latter.

Log and Transfer is part of FCP. For it to recognize EX files you have to install our Log and Transfer extension. This adds EX support. You can’t import EX files without this add-on.

The XDCAM Browser plugin can be downloaded at sony.com/xdcam-downloads. The Log and Transfer add-on is currently not posted but I can get it to you if you need it.
