Hello everybody, I recently came across some tapeless cameras. But could not figure out which is having edge over other.
Sony EX1 and EX3 are good solid cameras I suppose.
Then there are HMC 80 and 150 series and AC 160 and AC 130 and HVX200 and HPX 250 from Panasonic. All of them claim to be good. Then what is that thing which makes them apart from each other or which camera is a class apart in this range of cameras.
let us ignore the price of memory cards, we just consider the quality which matters the most.
low light conditions and noise are not to be ignored…..

I can’t speak of the other cameras. What format are they?

The EX-1 / 3 shoot in the XD Cam format which gives you a good quality color space. The camera shoots in 4.1.1 but with an external recorder can also record in 4.2.2.

It also shoots well with little noise in low light.

[Brent Dunn] “The camera shoots in 4.1.1”

    EX codec is 4:2:0.

1/2″ chip gives a bit more control over depth of field and better low light performance.

    Hello Brent,
As far as I know EX1/3 records in 4.2.0 color space.
About other panasonic cameras, record in AVCHD format, but which gives better quality i.e. what i am trying to find out…..
    Waiting for suggestions……

I like em both… it’s really worth a demo. Personally I give the edge to the Panasonic’s if for nothing else than SDHC cards are way cheaper and easier to deal with than SxS cards. Not that you can’t trick your way around that with 3rd party adapters. But then again it’s your data you’re playing with there.

I have shot with the EX-1, EX-3 and nex 5 on the same shoot with the same lighting and the EX’s are much sharper than the 5. Stick with the EX’s.

    JFYI, EX is not 4:1:1. It’s 4:2:0.

If we compare, Panasonic HVX 200 with color space 4.2.2 and 100mbps recording, with EX3 4.2.0 and 35 mbps reording.
Which will give us better visual treat….

I suggest you go to a reputable dealer and compare them side by side.
