These are designed for DSLRs and from what I can tell do not support playback of video files. They may work for the basic backup but will not really work as a full featured transfer/DIT station where you can QC the actual video. We’d recommend a laptop and either the Sony Content Browser Software (free, optional AVCHD plugin = 19.95) or else a 3rd party transfer solution like ShotPut Pro.

You can install the new UDF driver without uninstalling the old one. The new driver will replace the existing one on the system. If you ever need to manually remove it it’s in your Extensions folder and is called ‘SxS_UDF.kext’.
Yes, you should install/update them in the recommended order.

JFYI there really is no ‘Clip repair’ option per se. What happens is that if you put the card back into the camcorder that made the recording it may attempt to close/heal the damaged file and update the database file automatically. Failing this you can try the Clip–>UPDATE option in the OTHERS menu.

Do you know for sure that the card was ejected too soon? The 0 bytes file does not bode well. For the other 4, try XDCAM Browser. It can also rewrap for FCPX. If the clips don’t show up when you point to the volume/folder in the Explorer Window, try manually importing the 4 good .mp4s. This will create a new BPAV folder (though you may lose the file spanning information). https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads

the crashes and hangups are probably due to the hardware acceleration on your video card; FCP shows marked differences in how it handles MPEG footage based on what card is used

Yes, the SUB folder contains the MPEG4 proxies. You can configure XDCAM Browser to view Proxies instead of the high res if you are on a slower machine. You can also edit with them in Avid and Vegas and then up-convert to full res.

There’s no special setting to determine card capacity or anything else when you format. Go to (on most cameras) Menu–>Others–>Media Format. Do not format on your computer or manually drag files to the Trash. Note that depending on firmware versions the capacity of the formatted card may vary but not by much.
After you format set the record format of the camera, also in the OTHERS menu. The 1080 SP formats have the lowest data rate and will give you the longest HD record times but the HQ formats yield better quality. If you really are losing an hour of card capacity the SD card may be bad.

A few things worth clarifying..
F3 files are .mp4-wrapped, not .mxf-wrapped.
XDCAM Transfer, XDCAM Browser and the FCP Log and Transfer add-on only rewrap to .mov using the native XDCAM MPEG 2 codecs. They do not transcode to ProRes. This would have to be done after the rewrap using Compressor, Episode etc. For one-stop shopping you can use a dailies program like Proxy Mill to quickly generate ProRes directly from XDCAM EX .mp4 files.
If FCP and Resolve are resident on the same system you can bring the rewrapped (to .mov) XDCAM files directly into Resolve. If FCP is not on the system, the necessary QT components will not be present in the QuickTime library and you’d need a 3rd party QT plugin like XD-Decode to add support for these files. (Apple does not license the XDCAM codecs for use on non-FCP systems the way they do with ProRes.) If you convert to ProRes you can bring the files into Resolve with no additional components.
