if you save/edit the roles as ‘mono 2’, ‘mono 3’ etc you have meaningful names and it’s a bit easier to do the mapping..

That is actually a limitation/idiosyncrasy of Final Cut Pro X. They do not make it very intuitive to export a multitrack QuickTime file. All the Exporter does is take the file and put an .mxf wrapper around it. In FCP 7 the audio setup is much easier and we are spared all the Role setup.

I have it working pretty solidly now and created a template with the roles renamed to ‘mono track 2, mono track 3 etc’. Once that’s out of the way the rest is pretty simple.

But I feel your pain…

Thanks– I’m assuming you mean ‘XDCAM Transfer’ when you say Log and Transfer? Our older XDCAM Transfer plugin allowed pretty much unlimited sub-clipping on a particular clip.

something is dreadfully wrong or we are missing some info here; Content Browser only re-wraps upon import to FCP. it has no idea how to transcode during this process so even if it lost its mind it’s next to impossible that this would be the result.

that said, i can make a few recommendations:

1) use Content Browser 2.0.1 and make sure FCPX is @ 10.0.8.

2) use the free Camera Import plugin for X…this does the same thing as CB (places a QT wrapper around the file, leaving it in its native codec) but natively within FCP X

Just to clarify a few things:

1) Neither XDCAM Transfer nor the EX Log and Transfer plug-in transcode to ProRes. The files always stay in their native codec, rewrapped to an .mov file

2) Content Browser supports the same functionality, though there is a more complex UI and feature set as it is an all-in-one management application. The Transfer plugins were strictly for FCP ingest/rewrap.

the expiring part is the demo version of the XDCAM Advanced Pack feature set which provides advanced XDCAM logging/metadata control. the base application including all of the XAVC features (and 99% of the application’s total functionality) will not ever expire.

You don’t need the SxS device driver. It is only required when reading cards in from the Express card slot on a laptop or when using Thunderbolt adaptors. You only need the UDF file system driver if you are reading cards in via the camera or an external USB card reader.

FCP 7: use Content Browser or XDCAM Transfer in plug-in mode. Select File–>Import–>Sony XDCAM or Sony Content Browser. In CB, right/control click on your clip(s)–>Import into FCP. Files will be rewrapped to .mov in the native XD codec and stored wherever Transfer/Browser are set in their Prefs to store the files.

FCP X: Use the Sony Media Import plugin and import using the Import Media (formerly ‘Import From Camera’) utility. In X this is all done within the application, i.e. our plugin adds back-end support and doesn’t open a separate plug-in browser. Open the Media Import window, point to your card or archive, select clips and import.

You can also use Content Browser to import EX files into X but because the FCP X architecture is different you don’t open CB from within X. In the CB preferences under the FCP tab, make sure the FCP version selection is set to ‘X’. Then open X, go back to CB and import your files using the same ‘Import to FCP’ command.
