October 31, 2019 at 12:05 pm in reply to: 2019 Mac Pro – show of hands

Since I am still locked into OSX/ProRes/Premiere by my main client’s workflow I will be sorely tempted by the MPro20.

As often stated, I am no fan of the 2013 and the lack of Tbolt 3 is slowing performance down with peripherals. I am still networked to my 2010 MPro for access to PCI express cards (older raids and LTO tape drive) and the possibility of upgrading to the 2020 and transferring the cards and then getting rid of (selling??) both the 2010 and 2013 is intriguing. Also interested in seeing what the “afterburner” card can do, as well as the new GFX card setup.

While cost is a big consideration, if I’m working it’s a business expense, if I’mot working I expect re-sale value to be pretty high.

Anxiously waiting for the release so I can make plans.

[Bill Davis] “But Herb, the extra speed everywhere else is EXACTLY what provides an editor with the extra time for watching, thinking and discussing.”

I thought the extra time came from slow coffee machines.

    Thanks for posting that Oliver.

Me being me, I really loved this line :

“You will need to point out the benefits of going a bit slower to get the best results because watching, thinking and discussing all go at about the same speed as they always have and should not be rushed.”

[David Dean] “He’s not an Assistant Editor, because he has nothing to do with the actual cutting of the show”

Doesn’t matter, he should get AE credit.

[Chris Wright] “if its an actual neg, you just use invert effect or flip the curves points opposite(or only bring them as far as they exist in the histogram)”

If it’s a true film color negative this alone will not work, because you will have to account for the orange dye masking that was used to counteract deficiencies in the magenta and blue dies. This orange cast is visible when you handle most color negatives, still or motion.

My problem with the “Boring Alert” isn’t the concept, which is bad enough, but with the fact that it is totally unnecessary.

All timelines have a “Boring Alert” built in, all you have to do is notice the longest uninterrupted cuts on your uppermost video track – ta da – and cut them up. it’s called using your eyes – so where is the need for a separate function key to show you what you can already see at a glance.

Which is why the “flash frame finder” has some value – because 1 and 2 frame cuts are nearly invisible on most timelines.

Other than the cut page, it seems to be a lot of feature catch up – object removal, morph efx, auto music ducking are all recent Ppro features. Nothing wrong with that, just saying.

As for the cut page – well I still think the “boring filter” is idiotic, but i do like the idea of a flash frame locator, so there you go. The “sync” editor is nothing I would ever use, but I’m guessing the regular edit page has a real, full-featured multicam function, so I guess this might be a useful feature for someone.

The performance on a laptop was impressive, but then again it was a demo.

    Thanks for posting.

  • [Bill Davis] “It was just a story link. Not a poke in the eye. But these are apparently sensitive times.”

I’ve often thought that any sentence that contains the word “just”, as in “just a story link,” needs to be looked at closely. “Just” is often a con man’s best weapon, employed to hide an important point behind a cover of irrelevance. It’s “just” $99 dollars, it’s “just” a few blocks away, we’re “just” friends. Whenever I see such a sentence I immediately listen to it again without the “just” – as in “it was a story link.” Yes it was, and it was the same sort of link you have been posting for the past 5 years. And it contains the same overstatement and hyperbole that we have all grown so used to. So if you’re looking for the cause of this stasis you mention, you might want to look in a mirror.

[Bill Davis] “8 years on nearly.”

And X still hasn’t taken the world by storm. It’s an important part of the post eco system, used by a significant number of editors, and fully capable in many workflows. But I’d argue that it is, after 8 years of exposure, still less significant in the overall post world than FCP 7 was when it was EOL’d.

Which shouldn’t matter to anyone who is happily using it, but the distance between the proselytizing and the facts is a bit of an irritation, something less than a poke in the eye and more like a loose eyelash.

  • Same old, same old. Could only get through two minutes of the “searching” segment before rolling my eyes. This guy may have been editing for 25 years but apparently he’s never heard of organizing footage on timelines and pancake editing.

[Oliver Peters] “This function simply counts frames. I doubt there’s any real AI involved”

I was being a wee bit facetious Oliver. I find the whole idea of a “boring” notification ridiculous. If you’re looking for long takes, just look at your timeline – how much easier can it get?
