There is a plug-in called Hawaiki AutoSplit, from FX Factory, that animates split screens, However it does not transition to full frame.

  • [Oliver Peters] ” I was at the Avid Connect event and it was again generally well-received. Unfortunately, their story came across as a bit too audio-centric, as they introduced a number of new audio products, including a live sound console. At the same time, they didn’t play up the MC 8.3.1 release at the keynote, which adds resolution-independent project and export support (primarily focused on adding 2K and 4K now). Their challenge is attracting new users without changing the UI so radically that they lose their base. A tricky wire act.”

Personally I’ve nothing to say about Media Composer other than I don’t use it and everyone else I know who cuts in NYC does. My comments about their identity had to do with the push to have Isis work with non-avid products, their push, as you noted , with audio as opposed to MC, and also opening up Avid to third party I/O. While this might be a corporate vision of inclusion, to an outsider it looks like “hey let’s throw everything up on the wall and see what sticks.”

  • As a non attendee it seemed that Black magic once again had the most interesting new products. The Ursa Mini looks very interesting for the money, as does the mini 4K cameras – we use a remote high angle camera for shooting down into high sided pots during cooking and these would be perfect when we move to 4K (not this year.) Resolve 12 looks closer to being a competitive NLE as opposed to an editing module inside of grading software.

Adobe CC as well as FCPX demonstrated they were still committed to upgrading their offerings with some interesting developments, but nothing earth shattering. Avid sounds like they are thrashing around, trying to figure out what kind of company they want to become.

But to an outsider what was most surprising about NAB this year was the lack of surprises. Arri, Cannon, Panasonic offering 4K upgrades is not news; Smoke as an editor seems to have stalled out; Lightworks is still marginal. Avid/Adobe Anywhere/Everywhere is still nowhere. 8K now replaces 3D and HFR as the new “must have” tool of the future that nobody really wants. LTO, slow as it is, is still the best archiving medium. Seems like a year of consolidation, at least from 2 thousand miles away.

[Simon Ubsdell] “it’s worth bearing in mind that trailer companies are usually working on the movie a very long time before it’s even finished, or indeed completed principal photography.”

Ahh, the light bulb goes on, even if rather dimly. Didn’t realize that. Thanks to Charlie and Simon – a further example of why I head out to this pasture first thing every morning.

[Charlie Austin] “I cut trailers Herb. They will come in handy.”

Seriously and out of curiosity, since I’ve never cut trailers – I would have thought that you would be using the title treatments of the film itself – doesn’t the distributor provide graphic elements for that? Or am I being naive?

Well then I guess the next time your cutting a 3D Imax fantasy adventure story on your FCPX kit the 3D titles will come in handy.

  • [Oliver Peters] ” A lot of the new products throughout were infrastructure items, like converters for SDI-to-IP and IP routing. The reason IP is attractive as a change from SDI is file-based production and post, but also support for 4K and 8K production.”

Pardon my stupidity, but what is IP routing?

  • [tad newberry] ” What i was worried about was when 2014 first came out, it was pretty buggy, and we had tried it and had problems, but that was almost a year ago, so just checking.”

PPro 2014 is very stable at this point. Of course CC 2015 is just around the corner, and there are generally issues when a new version of anything comes out.

April 16, 2015 at 2:46 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro Multicam Disable Bug

[Justin Daniels] “If I choose to disable the multi-cam option for any clip, the angle of said clip is automatically changed to whatever the original master angle of the multi-clip was I.E. if I had made angle 3 the active one in my timeline and then choose to disable the multi-cam option (because I don’t need all three shots active at the moment) then Premiere automatically switches the camera angle back to whatever’s occupying the “angle 1″ position.”

If I understand you correctly PPro is sometimes changing angles when flattening – or are you talking about the “enable / disable” choice when right clicking on a multiclip in the timeline. If it’s the former you have a bad install, if it’s the latter, you can’t really flatten clips this way, this choice mostly has to do with audio. There is no equivalent in Ppro of FCP7’s ability to enable and disable multicam operations on your timeline – with Adobe it’s a photoshop-style one-way irreversible flattening.

  • [tad newberry] “i hate to start a new project and then not have it work at some point AND not be able to finish it in PPCC, so thought i would see how 2014 is working for any of you who are using it.”

Like any of the 3A’s, you can cut any type of project on it very efficiently. If your coming from FCP7, other than a few missing keyboard commands, it has everything you’ve ever had and a ton of stuff you’ve never had before. I’m just completing a 26 show series for PBS and have been very happy coming over from FCP7. What specifically are you worried about?
