    for whatever reason, (surely some mistake) they consider FCPX a dead man walking, and across the panel, they state and with tons of body language and nods agree, that if adobe were to game out a profitable frictionless PPro software only level anywhere project/bin sharing ala Avid, then Avid is wilderbeest in the open too. Not sure how I feel about a total lack of competition to PPro, but its kind of staggering how fast adobe have pressed the issue.

    Part of me never believed them when they said they were going to make it the photoshop of editing, not in the most rabid CS6 days, but not so sure at all now. The fact that avid almost bent the knee on storage interoperability would make you wonder. Its hard to conceive them doing that outside of a core hardware defence strategy in the face of large client PPro pressure.

    there’s no way Avid opened up their hardware to PPro out of the good of their heart. Also – from the editors on the panel, both Avid primarily in features and broadcast, both publicly expressed direct preference for premiere.

    Just to be clear, there was almost no discussion of FCP X, just before everyone gets their knickers in a wad. They had a show of hands of users in attendance, and noted a marked increase in PPro over last year and no increase in FCP X. In the two hours, there were a lot of interesting issues discussed, many of which had to do with the state of editing in general (especially in part 2).

    This week at NAB, getting general impressions from the floor and other folks, Adobe definitely has the momentum. When you looked for NLEs used in other booths, the majority had PPro, and only a few with MC or FCP X. However, a lot of trash cans were in use.

    for sure – it was tangential. Genuinely not doing (largely) an X knock here. I’m incompetent using it anyway. I shouldn’t.
    was just struck by the level of agreement around what adobe were likely engaged in, the producer citing uptake directly to the audience, even the bit at the end where they agreed it wasn’t a 12 month outcome fait accompli. but the notion that they were agreeing on a slightly longer timeframe, which it really looked as though they were at the end, was crazy striking.
    I don’t think I’ve ever seen software do a two year roman advance like PPro? Mollinaire Paint and effect, Combustion, X-res from macromedia, a million 3D packages, none of that went anywhere – I can’t recall a company stepping into any area so previously un-owned by them and owning it like this in donkey’s years. At least it shows that adobe can really, really still turn it on. Project Candy is channelling full specification cube LUTs from your iphone capture to Premiere Pro for god’s sake.
    As a bend the knee subscriber at least this is all something to gawp at.

    I can’t speak for my colleagues on the panel that night, but I believe that there will NOT be ONE NLE to rule them all. Rather, I see a segmented market future with MANY different NLE’s tuned to a particular kind of workflow or project. Here on the COW, and in this forum particularly, the tendency is to claim victory for one flag or the other. In my opinion, that’s a bit myopic. After attending this year’s NAB, I’m further convinced that the notion of “One NLE is best” will NOT be the case. As one NLE rises, so falls another. And so on. And so on. You’re going to see even more of that in the coming years. As evidence I point to the fact that Resolve (as an editor) wasn’t really in the discussion last year. This year… everyone’s talking about it.

    Since we all love to read tea leaves. What does everyone make of the fact that last year, the vast majority of the building branding at NAB was Adobe. This year that was gone and it was largely BlackMagic. I know it’s just one aspect of marketing, but it seems that over the the past few months, I’ve seen a large scale back. Knowing advertising a bit, it might all be just a specific campaign end. But typically if your campaign is driving the growth you need in a market segment, you keep going. I was just surprised. Then again with 38 new products to promote, maybe BMD just came calling with cash. Tea leaves for sure. Kinda missed being able to spend more time in the press room this year.

    Adobe’s not slowing down — they’re advertising Photoshop on TV. Have you seen the ad yet?

    I hadn’t seen that… slick. Though, it’s weird seeing a TV commercial for Photoshop.

    Yes! Resolve.

    I’m an FCP7 person, and have been cutting in Avid, Premiere, and X lately — but now it’s Resolve 11. (Proxies and 16-bit audio seem to help the playback problem.) I like Resolve a lot. Possibly best. I think it feels easy because there’s a lot of FCP 7 here.

    It’s a bit like a Brit getting off the plane in New Zealand and renting a car. Ahh. The turns are easy.

    I just hope they get 12 out quickly, and it works as promised.

    Absolutely yes for sure – for the amount I actually know at all – was only half looking to stir it up from the cheap seats..
