What’s strange is that in Cinema Tools the “offending” clips are listed as having a speed of 29.96 as opposed to 29.97. After conforming they behave properly.

Flip4Mac encodes WMV. files as well as any other encoder. That being said there are any number of reasons why your files may not be suitable for streaming. You should get a list of file specs from the Web master and make sure you selecte the correct encoding options.

When I said there are no solutions to the time code problem I meant within FCP. Still I haven’t heard of this software before, looks like a good deal. Have you tried it and does it properly handle capturing quicktime files across time code breaks? And if it does, then you’ve got to wonder why apple can’t seem to do it.

Final Cut has always been atrocious at handling timecode breaks. Apparently the problem has something to do with Quicktime itself and the way it handles, or more aptly, doesn’t handle timecode metadata. There is currently no solution to this problem, and there won’t be until Apple revises Quicktime in a fundamental way.

I often use FCP for 4 camera multi-clip editing of DVCPRO HD material, usually 720P60 and 720P30. I have 2 editing systems – an older Dual 2.5 Power Mac, with a fibre-channel 4 TB X-raid for storage, and a newer Intel Quad MacPro, with a much faster 6 TB Maxx Digital e-sata raid. Both systems have 4 gigs of Memory. Given that the Maxx digital I/O specs are more than double the X-raid specs of about 200Kb/s, and that the Intel is an obviously newer and faster machine it often surprises me that there is no discernible difference in operation when handling an HD work-flow – they both manage fine – although when working with multi-clip HD you tend to get “green” bars in the timeline, meaning it plays back in real time but with reduced visual quality. It’s no problem, if you need to look at pristine video I just collapse the multi-clips, then un-collapse when I go back into editing mode. No dropped frames for either system when going up to 6 cameras.

To me it sounds like your only need is faster storage. I would recommend any of the popular e-sata boxes, all of which do well over 300 Kb/s. I’m pleased with the Maxx Digital, but the Dulce, Sonnet, and Cal-Digit boxes all have their adherents – you can’t go wrong with any of them.

I wouldn’t say “absolutely free”, but it’s basically “sold” for the cost of dubbing & shipping

If you go through the basic catalogue material there is no dubbing charge. They loan you betaSP tapes that you can either digitize or make copies of. No, they don’t hand deliver it to you, but I still consider that free.

The individuals in the footage have specific rights to their image, so you may still need to get a release from anyone who can be recognized in a shot.

For all practical purposes this isn’t an issue. You do not need releases for any shots of the astronauts and crew. If you use any of NASA’s produced films in it’s entirety you do not need releases for anything in the films. You might need releases for their narrators if you re-cut the films, but, unless you were putting it in a feature or nationally broadcast spot, it’s a fairly moot point.

NASA supplies their release policy with the materials. For what Simon wants, he has no release issues.

Do you mean to say you are having these compressor problems ONLY when exporting direct from a multi-clip sequence – or is this happening when exporting from FCP in general?
