Is the incredibly long frame by frame attempt to cross a TC break simply a facet of FCP 6(updated to current revision) or are there any settings that i should be checking. It is occuring with all tape formats via RS422 as well as FW on an 8 core mac pro with a Blackmagic Eclipse attached via PCI card.I’ll leave a tape digitizing and when i come back it will have spent ten minutes trying to locate the TC break.

    Dan –

Final Cut has always been atrocious at handling timecode breaks. Apparently the problem has something to do with Quicktime itself and the way it handles, or more aptly, doesn’t handle timecode metadata. There is currently no solution to this problem, and there won’t be until Apple revises Quicktime in a fundamental way.

Thanks for the reply. That is what i suspected and wanted to clarify before i spend anymore time trying to make it behave.

    Hi
    Sort of. 😉
For formats that can be captured by FireWire there is this:
    https://www.squarebox.co.uk/lcplus.html
Automatic retry if dropped frames or tape errors are detected, ensuring frame perfect captures every time (even when capturing to a slow external drive).
    Automatic handling of timecode resets.

    Paul –

When I said there are no solutions to the time code problem I meant within FCP. Still I haven’t heard of this software before, looks like a good deal. Have you tried it and does it properly handle capturing quicktime files across time code breaks? And if it does, then you’ve got to wonder why apple can’t seem to do it.

    Hi
I haven’t used it, but I know one of the developers on the team so can get a fully description of its capabilities – and limitations if any…

[Herb Sevush] “you’ve got to wonder why apple can’t seem to do it.”
They seem to have applied a Log & Transfer non-linear paradigm to Log & Capture capturing off-tape.
Seems obvious – even Apple should have thought it through by now…
