DV50 is DVCPRO50. Use the DV50 anamorphic version if you shot 16×9. Super white is something you should stay away from, unless you have a specific reason not to. DVCPRO 50 16×9 looks great in FCP – have cut over 50 1/2 hour broadcast shows with it and everyone loves it – bumps up real nice to HD as well.

I appreciate your trying to enlighten me, but i still have a few dark clouds overhead.

not finding enough difference to proclaim one better than the other from a visual point of view.

Is this only true for conversions to ProRes, or even when shooting to ProRes? And if it is true for both, why would Apple even bother confusing the issue?

On the other hand I’m quite happy to learn that I can pretty much ignore HQ for all my editing needs.

The reason he couldn’t sell you anything is ’cause he ain’t a salesmen. He’s an academic and, get this, he’s giving away his code, publishing it for free, figuring that someone like Adobe might want to make use of it, because now that he’s worked it out he’s onto some other research.

I really think you should take a look at the whole piece, it’s an amazing piece of wizardry, and if you have to you can turn the sound off.

I have 2 Decklink HD cards, one 4 years old, the other 3. Never had any porblems with either, quality is excellent. Many people prefer the Kona cards, citing quality and tech support, I’m not qualified to compare the 2, just giving my experience with Blackmagic.

If you have 3.5 Terra on a 14 drive Xserve then you have them populated with 250Gig drives. The first thing you can do is increase your capacity by upgrading your drives – I upgraded to 400Gig drives a year ago and now have 5.6 TB. If the Xserve can handle 500Gig drives (and I can’t see why they wouldn’t) you can double your capacity to 7 Terra with a cost of about $1500 – no extra cards, nothing else to do but plop in the drives.

Alternately, if you are absolutely determined to add an additional fiber channel raid, you should know that you don’t need a fiber switch, many fiber raid boxes allow you to daisy chain other raid boxes thru them. Unfortunately the Xserve is NOT one of of those devices, so you can’t do this with 2 Xserves. But currently I’m running a Medea FCR2X and an Xserve off of 1 dual channel Fiber Card – The Medea to the card, the Xserve to the Medea. If Medea had not been bought up and basically shut down by Avid I would have recommended them – fantastic tech support, great box, better thru-put then the Xserve, even with less (10) drives.

There are workflow issues with each and every option when dealing with DVCPRO HD. At 29.97, using firewire input, as you’ve noted you get a frame count of even numbers that goes up to 60 – because Varicams always record 59.97 fps and when flagged at 29.97 fps you are actually importing every other frame. This is more a nuisance then a problem. If you import via SDI the input card will renumber the frames properly.

I happen to know Eron – he cut a one hour PBS pledge special for me a year ago and is a fine and accomplished editor. This whole thread seems to be coming down on him a little heavily – it seems to me he is simply, and pleasantly, asking for some help in an area he is not quite familiar with on the organizational side – and I thought that’s what the COW was for. If I had any experience with reality TV I would give him what help I could, I would hope that others would do the same – without assuming he’s in over his head, which he’s not.
