[Thomas Frank] “to a uprising generation that might be more talented with less technical knowledge which is learnable.”

You make the mistake of many talent scouts in various sports who look at a kid and say, jeez look at his natural ability, what an athlete, we can teach him how to (hit, pitch, throw, catch …)but we can’t teach natural ability. Then they sign the kid and it is almost always a disaster, he never does learn the skills, because it turns out that “learning” is also a talent, and if you don’t have the habit of learning down before your twenty, your not very likely to pick it up later.

What I’m trying to say is that the ability to learn what you so contemptuously term “technical knowledge” is a rare talent, as rare as having a good eye for composition or color, and that it’s a losers choice to bet on some talented youngster who has not shown an interest in the technical side of his trade. Imagination is good, ideas are a dime a dozen but the ability to execute, to put thoughts into action is rarest of all. It also helps if you know how to light.

[Bill Davis] “But while you’re trying to get one of the 2,000 rarified slots at the top of that Hollywood pyrimid – or even one of the 20,000 “noted professionals” slots at the level down from that, or the 200,000 slots down at the “working craftsman” level – over on the web, in corporate suites, and on the screens of millions of iPads there are other games being played. And out there, there are probably 20 MILLION opportunities to craft a reputation and a decent life.”

So you think being ignorant of the basics of the craft of visual storytelling is some sort of advantage? That Ipad viewers prefer a shitty looking image and badly recorded sound? Most people don’t grow up to be novelists or poets but it still helps to know an adjective from an adverb, even if your posting on the web.

The only thing i got out of this interview is that Rick Young shouldn’t be allowed to shoot an interview. We’ve got this whole big room to work with so lets put the subject flat up against a wall and lets put his dark shirt on a dark couch so it looks like his disembodied head is floating in space and then we’ll act like we never heard of a fill light. In a way this was the perfect comment on the software made for the Utube generation. Nothing like attention to craft.

[Darren Kelly] ” What I did was ask him not to respond to anything I said. I am within my rights to that opinion and request.”

No, you are not. well, let me back off that statement a bit. You are within your rights to say anything you want, even if it violates the meaning of a public forum. But I am encouraging Craig, and anyone else in that same situation to pay no attention to what you want.

You seem to think this is a private exchange. It isn’t. Even when there is a back and forth between posters it is actually addressed to everybody. You are trying to deny me the ability to hear Craig’s opinion of your posts, and you don’t have that right. On a public forum you do not get to dictate what other people should do, you only get to dictate how you choose to respond. If you want privacy you are in the wrong place.

I often, change that, I almost always strongly disagree with Craig, but I do not consider his responses trolling, even if he gets off the point somewhat.

    Darren –

This is a public forum. While it might seem addressed to you personally, when Craig, or anyone else, posts in response to something you write it’s actually addressed to everyone. If you don’t like the content, you don’t have to read or respond, but you don’t have the right to tell anyone else not to post a response. If that’s what you want, then stay off public forums. I for one am interested in Craig’s remarks, even if I disagree with most of them. They were not personal until you took that tone. So I am posting this to encourage Craig to respond to you or anyone else whenever he feels like he has something to add.

[Steve Connor] “Trying to say that he is not qualified to state his opinions”

Was David’s comment untrue? If it was true, then his lack of experience in Pro workflows is pertinent in this thread. A persons background and experience is extremely relevant in evaluating their opinions.

    Steve –

You might not be the only person, but then again you might. I didn’t see where David was out of line, especially on this thread, where I get called a Luddite on a regular basis. It isn’t demeaning to call someone a chemical engineer – at least not the last time I looked.

[Craig Seeman] ” if you’re just doing a QC check and making adjustments Resolve Lite may be a very reasonable solution for both external monitor check and adjustments.”

Not to beat a dead horse, but if it’s such a reasonable solution then why am I not tempted to use it while working in Legacy, or PPro or Avid or Edius or …

It’s a solution made reasonable only by X’s current limitations, limitations acknowledged by Apple as they assure everyone they will fix this for the next upgrade. If they didn’t perceive it as a problem then why have they announced they are fixing it. If Apple can acknowledge this, why can’t you?

    Craig –

it’s not the cost, it’s the inconvenience of having to bounce out of one program, export an XML, open another totally different program just to look at something in a monitor. That’s a ridiculous waste of time and energy for something so basic.

I know there are ways to work around many of X’s current limitations, but why should an editor have to “work around” functions that every other pro NLE on the market includes as basic? You are undermining all the speed benefits X gives you with that sort of workflow, it would be faster and easier to stay with Legacy.

This whole thread was started by bill claiming X was ready for –

“export and delivery in ways that are acceptable to the entire planet of video delivery RIGHT THIS SECOND.”

This is currently not the case. Using DaVinci as a work around doesn’t make that statement any truer.

This is also fairly moot because these issues should be resolved by the next upgrade. I was merely addressing Bill’s assertion that these issues were already resolved.
