Remember that FCPX works much, much better with prores than high compressed files like mp4.

Even though you projects/events will grow, you can throw your files away when finished. If you want to re-edit your film, then just open you little archive and just do a transcode again, then you’ll get’em back.

I’ve made a util for easy deleting High Quality Media, Proxies, Renders and even Optical Flow Files. These types of files are not needed for archive and can be re-created.

    Not in mine….

I just opened an old 9 project, and added a new FCPX XML file into it… No problems at all…

Also, if you use FCPX, motion, compressor and DaVinci, you don’t need the extra stuff…

If you never use EDL, 7 to x or x to 7, the only thing you really need is xtoPro, to get the audio out…

    so

FCPX, Motion, compressor, DaVinci and X2Pro, is still far less, for us that has left to “OLD” way of working.

    🙂

Buying a Mac Pro is always risky. There will always be new ones…

At least now we know there will be a new, but not when and to what price…

But you need to earn money until then, so if you need a macpro today, you buy it, but not the most expensive one. Earn some cash with it, then jump for the new one…

You can always wait for stuff, but you have to have some income in the meantime, not ?

Hi, I’ve done the transition from FCP7 to FCPX now in two companies, corporate business mediahouses.

Both went really smooth, and both having FCPX on Xsan. We work on each others projects all the time, and backup is now bless.

We create a folder with a lot of empty predefined forlders inside, and just use Add san location to this folder.
For backup we just copy the project folder and all is in place. We do a lot of reference media, but to media that is inside the top project folder. If import from other projects we use “copy to event” on import.

We also run it with DaVinci Resolve, and using Nuendo for audiowork. X2Pro works just fine here.

Don’t miss, tracks, renderhell, framerates problems, double viewer, saving, avid or adobe. Sometimes I use Photoshop. We still use AfterEffects for animation and stuff. But have done a lot with motion and building our own graphics inside FCPX/Motion.

Also, I’ve just done an exhibition video for 3xHD resolution, yes thats it, 5760 x 1080. Inside FCPX. Works!

  • I agree with juan here.

I build a system with a 2012 mac, 32 GB RAM and Cubix expantion box. this one had 1 RED Rocket and 3 GTX 570 2.5GB version. GUI was on internet ATI 5770. Also I had a BMD card and FC card internal.

This system did a really great performance, “never” ran out of nodes on HD. And 4K RED, ran realtime as well with a lot of nodes…

Disk I/O was on a Xsan system (normally 150-200 MB/s) so not that fast. But no problem for Resolve to do it’s job.

    Cardwise; performance vs price…

“Also wondering how big the need for XtoProtools is if you have Logic X.”

If you are going to use Nuendo or ProTools as soundediting xtoProtools is still valid!
