December 2, 2008 at 9:21 am in reply to: Final Cut Pro 7 wishlist

*this was meant for the end of this thread… sorry

    strange… no more wishes?

i thought these things worked 🙂

this list was assembled by me and a few other FCP trainers in our last TTT training a while back (almost a year ago) it was sent to apple… a few things have been mentioned before but heck…

    DON’T STOP WISHING 🙂

    practical wishing

    1. modify timecode. in the Modify menu there is an option to change TC or switch to AUX TC, when you de-select the check mark FCP will eliminate the master TC, if you re-check the mark, the master TC is zeroed, it also cancels TC in the original media files. i think that on such an important function there should be an extra warning question.

    2. Add “Reel name” to sequences export – if one clip is exported it will take it’s reel name, if not FCP should ask you for a reel name.

    3. dissolve. dissolves and other transitions can be placed ending, starting or centered on cut yet in many cases comes up a need for a-symeric transition (starting 5 frames before ending 20 after the cut) i hate saying this, but the way Avid does custom positioning for transitions is very useful.

    4. changing speed on the timeline. speed changes on the timeline are tied to a ripple action that in most cases is not desired, either pushing or pulling the rest of the sequence according to the new duration of the modified clip. even if i work on an higher empty track.
it would be nice to have the option to choose between rippling and overwriting/shortening.

    5. go to next edit. only stops at first frame of cuts… opt + go-to-next-edit could stop at last frame of clips on the timeline. extremely useful in reconforming FX shots, and stop-motion animation.

    6. keyframes. can’t be copied and pasted, multiple selected, moved in groups*, are not dynamic when trimming, collide unpleasantly with transitions and generally tend to be very archaic. it does not have to be Motion keyframes, but it could be so much better.

    7. color labeling. more freedom in coloring markers and clips on the timeline (without it affecting my master clips) and more colors.

    8. image sequence. FCP should regard and open image sequences like motion

    9. When sending to Motion Add the option to place the embedded motion above the original clips instead of replacing.

    creative wishing

    1. fast lane. it would be great to have the possibility to have a stripe on the timeline window somewhere that when hovered above gives (HUD style) the option to accelerate (from 0 to 100 in 3 seconds?) left or right on the timeline. it would help efficient mobility when zoomed in all the way and working on very short edits. or maybe a soundtrack like view

    2. interface brightness. a slider to adjust the background brightness of the browser, timeline and even buttons from the current medium gray to dark grays. a second slider could adjust the brightness of button content from black to white.

    3. Viever HUD. a full HUD containing the browser, effects, filters, controls and basic motion (somewhat like the aperture HUD) to the shot i am currently on in the timeline.

    4. adjustment track. the possibility to make adjustments and changes to a track (or slug) that will influence all cuts underneath.

    5. group/ungroup. the possibility to create groups from timeline clips, then move and apply changes to the group or to individual clips within it.

    6. linking audio and video. the possibility to link more than one video clip to the 24 potential audio clips.

    7. (pretty please with sugar on top…) full RGB workflow 🙂 ? please?

this thread should not die out… not when Christmas is so close (our christmas, april 20th)

    Yiannis

if nothing works for more than a day 🙂

sometimes its not a bad idea to do a clean reinstall of the studio.

if you own a full version of FCP studio, and have a couple of free hours, you might just save yourself a whole lot of time of troubleshooting

try this, or google for a similar app, there are a few out there

    https://www.finalcutpronews.com/2008/10/fcs-remover—u.html

    its a FCP studio remover

haven’t tried it yet as it quite new

after you remove, repair preferences in OS
then, using the OS install DVD, repair your system disk.

restart and install the studio again.

when you update the studio, don’t use software update, but rather go to the apple website and download the updates to your disk, then install them. computer voodoo can work… 🙂

this is a good tip for system updates, i believe that downloading combo from website then installing works better.

if this doesn’t work too… it won’t be a bad idea to do a clean install of leopard.

    good luck

    hi Yiannis

this is a long shot… but you can try if Rafael’s tip doesn’t work.

sometimes, when primary language in your system is other than English, proapps, especially compressor, go crazy on updates.

you can check in system preferences.

    is this your case?

November 26, 2008 at 1:50 am in reply to: Import transcriptions in to FCP

    Shane,

in Avid it works sweetly for transcripts as well as narrative scripts. only difference is that someone has to transcribe the whole thing first.

would be a cool addition to FCP…

    Michael,

if this feature is crucial to you, then you need Avid.
MC3 is not bad at all actually…

November 26, 2008 at 1:36 am in reply to: Cute Story

    strange story…

reminds me of my free FCP begging story..
in 2005 i lived in new york and a short film i edited won an editing award in a local festival. the prize, as stated in the program, was apples latest version of final cut. at the time, 4.5 HD was just over and Studio 1 came out. i was so thrilled and exited to upgrade from my hard earned student version of 4.5, but, to my surprise, when the award arrived it was the same old 4.5 bundle that i already had (about 2 month after the studio came out). and it was a non upgradeable version.

at this point i remember trying everything, from phone to letters, asking apple to replace the “prize” software i won for the actual version that was in stores.

nothing i wrote or said, made a difference, including being a poor student, a current owner of 4.5, a fan, a macbook owner (maybe if i had three macs…), it being fair (as 4.5 was already off stores at the time i won), it being only some plastic and cardboard for them… and even, ME WILLING TO PAY THE DIFFERENCE, ie. upgrade, in order to receive the newer version.

best answer i got at the time was that when apple sponsored the festival and offered the award 4.5 was the version and that’s why they can’t change it. they can’t.

the rep that helped me eventually felt so sorry for me he promised to add to my award the latest OS, 10.4 which also just came out, yay,

and gave it to me on a burned DVD… really.

    YMMV

maybe i should have just written a letter to Mr. Jobs

    🙂

    alan,

i am missing some data on your offline/online workflow.

did you freeze frame using shift + n from an SD timeline?

maybe next time you can freeze frame using the time remap tool in the motion tab, then scale, this should match in online just fine, with no crop or proportions issues.

November 24, 2008 at 12:59 pm in reply to: DV FIELS ISSUE when convert to 10bit Uncompressed

    hi Franco

    another thing.

if your project was shot on DV (any sort of DV on any camera) than it was recorded to tape as 8 bit. there is no need really to use 10 bit uncompressed (unless there is extensive 3D or 2D animation) which is hard drive and system consuming, and ads little to no significant data

for a good online to your DV material,

recapture timeline through capture card (SDI or component) as 8 bit uncompressed or even better, as Prores HQ.

you can’t turn DV 10 bit.

    🙂

up until a few months ago… i would say use automatic duck…

HOWEVER. i discovered this free tool
    Popcorn Island https://www.popcornisland.com/downloads

i have tried it and it works perfectly. used it in at least 5 projects by now.

i’m tempted to crown it my “best free app of 2008”

install it, and follow the simple instructions

    enjoy

November 15, 2008 at 8:56 am in reply to: 16×9 DVCPROHD to 4×3 (non-letterboxed) SD

    hi Henry

a little more info would help, but

a way you could do it.

edit your sequence on a timeline that matches your original clip’s settings. then export it as a QT using current settings, ie you are still 720 16:9 DVCproHD.

then create a timeline with your final required settings, import your exported DVCproHD, and dump it on the new timeline, this time forcing timeline settings. now, scale it up just enough to crop the sides and fill the frame (some info has to be lost or squeezed…), set your motion filtering quality to best in sequence settings, render and export.

i use this workflow in some of our DVCproHD projects for various exports, (web tends to be forgiving) i find it quick and satisfying. i do work in PAL world, so frame rate adjustments in NTSC are yours to deal with.

    hope it helps
