  • [Ville Pirilä] “Hey all !!
First of all, let me say that I’ve been reading…”

    hi Ville

    nice post 🙂

don’t feel confused.. or boggled at the whining complaints and disappointments you read about…

if Final cut studio wasn’t a great set of tools, no one would give a rat’s ass

we complain because we grew our expectations (which you do only towards things you care about) and because we’re post geeks who believe we could each re-write the world of non-linear editing into a smooth, efficient, affordable, utopia.

all editing software have problems… the better ones have thousands of users to complain about these problems and make it all look much worst than it actually is

if you are starting your way in this industry, and have the budget to afford it, Final cut studio is in my opinion the best way to go

as un-perfect as it may be…

    hi Rich

auto-duck is a fine and very useful tool…

which comes with a price tag of about 400$

    before you try it
check this one out, its completely free 🙂

    https://www.popcornisland.com/after-effects/final-cut-2-after-effects/

its a plugin/script that allows you to seamlessly send timelines to AE.

i have worked with it many times and can testify on its behalf.

definitely one of the best free tools around

about the HDV… backing what Walter and Matt wrote…

capture HDV to ProRes (or transcode if you must) and never look back.

    all the best

  • hi Dustin

[Dustin Parsons] “I got it to work by transferring straight from the camera into FCP “

what do you mean by that?
did you set the camera to USB device mode and and captured through it via L&T?

did your L&T worked well with P2 before?
did you install any new software recently?
Paragon installs can mess up L&T too

i have seen L&T work oddly in several cases on different systems.
these steps worked with varying success.

    1. wait. sometimes, strangely, it takes longer time than usual for L&T to load your files

    2. trash all prefs for fcp and QT including user data prefs, do a permission repair and restart your system

    3. i did have a system where nothing we tried helped and i eventually had to do a complete reinstall of OS and FCP.

    good luck

July 27, 2009 at 5:40 pm in reply to: HDCAM SR vs ProRes 4444

    Dear gary

i don’t think i have to state again my appreciation for your knowledge and experience…

and i’m definitely not trying to start a discussion with you on things you know 100 times better than me

i do however feel like clarifying, and on that occasion ask a question

[gary adcock] “My question is why are you comparing ProRes to a HDCAM SR format that is not used in the context you describing ? So what are comparing ProRes too, some obtuse theory?”

    i didn’t compare…

i did add to an existing discussion a piece of info i know of from publications and theory.

As this info is found virtually anywhere you read on SR decks or format specs, usually with no warning, explanation or footnote to state that it is extremely uncommon practice, how should i treat it?

should a practice be ignored just because its uncommon?

even in the confines of a theoretical discussion?

i will remember to add how rare and complex it is as of now…

[gary adcock] “(there maybe 1 or 2 SRW1’s that are capable of this type of capture in all of Israel)”

    🙂

there are maybe 1 or 2 SRW1’s AT ALL in Israel, and most probably none capable of this type of capture

looking forwards to read your ProRes 4444 article.

    all the best

[gary adcock]“Ok this is a MOOT POINT People!”

gary… this thread started as an informative comparison between ProRes4444 and HDCAM SR, my comment was purely informative, and although it is a rare and specific workflow, it does exist, and is one of the format’s published characteristics.

i didn’t suggest that it is the common use of SR, i even added “also”,

nor did i mention it to rub it in ProRes’s face.

i love ProRes and (unlike SR) i use it all the time.

    specs are specs..

no reason to make a moot out of me… 🙂

“upon further inspection, i can only apply 1 3way cc to the layer before, the red render bar comes up on the second application of it.”

then i believe there is something wrong with your settings…
make sure the timeline is set exactly like your source clips

or maybe something moved and you didn’t notice?

    any motion tab changes?

did you grade after collapsing your multiclip?

it sounds long… do you have anything other than 3-way on your shots?

does your timeline matches your media’s settings?

is it a gray render line without the 3 way filter?

it should be a faster render

the job you described seems quite technical and repetitive, i believe you will be better off staying in fcp.

color could probably do it, maybe even better, but you won’t save time,
and you would be using a Ferrari to drive 2 miles to work… 🙂

color is much more than a technical fix-it tool… its a story telling enhancer designed to allow great freedom in complex and simple color manipulation. it has a language and a workflow of its own, which has a learning curve… etc’ etc’ you got my point..

    peace
