hi Uli
did you see this link?
https://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/professionalformatsandworkflo...
it has workflows for different formats and Final cut 7
RED included
and another thing…
as R3D is quite massively compressed and so is ProRes 4444 (though much less than R3D) do you think its a good idea to grade from ProRes compressed R3D?
your initial plan was to work on a Scratch, which works native with R3D
Color works sort of native with R3D and hopefully much smother and better in the new version.. (which supports 4K)
why go through a 2nd compression?
i didn’t test ProRes 4444 yet, and maybe i’m all wrong and results are immaculate. However, its hard to believe that transcoding R3D to ProRes would result in better behaving files for grading than going native
hope this helps

hi Russell
this from the new ProRes white paper:

doesn’t it suggest ProRes 4444 is 6.7:1?
also, HDCAM SR has an HQ mode with 880 Mbs and 2:1 compression ratio
which ProRes is quite far from…i don’t think ProRes is meant to compete with SR…
but having it available for cheep, from SD to 28k in 4:4:4 and 12 bit color depth with support for alpha channel , in RGB or YCbCr color space is so cool and probably so useful
is there a better work format on the market?
this so much kicks DNxHD in the ass… it used to have in its favor over Prores, the fact that it supports alpha channel and offline sizes.
now it only has the fact its free 🙂
new ProRes definitely means DNX needs a brush-up
lets hope AjA are working on a new input for the Ki-Pro…

hi Steve,
cool for you 🙂
say.. did the installer remove Livetype or require you to remove it?
if not, does it still work?
just wondering…

agreed
ProRes family expansion has to be the biggest thing about this fairly modest update
looking forwards to test them in action..
and thinking how cool it will be when the next AjA Ki-Pro update supports the new flavors…
full raster 444 acquisition for under 4 grands.. and ready for post work
🙂 fun times ahead

it was crowded…. and the venue was ok
didn’t seem that there were many apple reps around, maybe i just didn’t notice them
if it wasn’t for the chance too meet people you see in flesh once a year (which still is the best function of supermeets) it all felt a little too obvious…
and though cool features in premiere are always so much fun… there was not even a slightest of hints on the near/far future of the apps these user groups are all about.
just last year a full house of users cheered when a fait hint of possible BR support in some near future was partly suggested on stage.. a silent disappointment crept in this year.
one of the largest pro-users communities in this field… is starting to feel neglected?
thank you LA user group organizers, for being so persistent and talented in putting together this huge evening
maybe next time the raffle could be broken into many shorter raffles throughout the event.
am i the only one who think its starting to feel like an endless bingo from hell 🙂 ?

gluetools is not free, 399$
it allows QT, therefore FCP to read and write cineon and DPX filesyou will import the EDL into FCP,
file – import EDL
then set the prefs (after you install gluetools you will have DPX as an option) and choose reconnect in “import for”this will generate an offline sequence, which you will reconnect to your original DPX files
it gets a bit more complicated, but basically its the workflow
assuming your DPX files are ok
there are more in depth workflows in the gluetools manual
hope this helps

to do in FCP you will need the gluetools plugin.look it up. it works well depending on the strength of your system
and the developer, Robert Monaghan is a great guy who gives amazing support to his product.i have tried the color workflow only once but the names of the files were not conformed correctly for color and the whole process felt quite sticky and slow.
