  • DPX files & EDL – can I do this in FCP?

    Hey gang,

was just passed a drive by a producer which contains dpx image sequences and edl’s and I have never worked with dpx before – it looks like Color is the only app i have which even recognizes them – what options do i have – can AE do this – i never heard of AE reading edl’s…

Thanks in advance for any advice you folks might be able to provide

    best

to do in FCP you will need the gluetools plugin.

look it up. it works well depending on the strength of your system
and the developer, Robert Monaghan is a great guy who gives amazing support to his product.

i have tried the color workflow only once but the names of the files were not conformed correctly for color and the whole process felt quite sticky and slow.

For DPX workflows with FCP, I use Gluetools as well as Pomfort Silverstack. Both have their uses and if DPX is bread and butter for you, check them out.

After Color 1.0.3, Color can now open pretty much any DPX file. And Color’s conversion to and from DPX to Quicktime is faster than QT and Gluetools. Especially over networked drives.

I’d say, try out Color first. If it doesn’t do it for you get Gluetools. Pomfort is better for automated conversions and burn-in TC kind of archiving of DPX.

Hey thanks for the speedy responses – just a couple questions:

    1) Is gluetools a free plugin for fcp?

    2) There are 2 folders each containing about 5,300 dpx files (image sequences) using the provided edl’s i need to conform – can anyone explain how to do this either in Color or with the gluetools plugin?

    Thank You

    gluetools is not free, 399$
it allows QT, therefore FCP to read and write cineon and DPX files

you will import the EDL into FCP,
    file – import EDL
then set the prefs (after you install gluetools you will have DPX as an option) and choose reconnect in “import for”

this will generate an offline sequence, which you will reconnect to your original DPX files

it gets a bit more complicated, but basically its the workflow

assuming your DPX files are ok

there are more in depth workflows in the gluetools manual

    hope this helps

Actually, Apple Color can do this. No real need for Gluetools. But if you need any form of QT to DPX and back rendering, then Gluetools is a worthwhile investment.

In Color, you import the EDL and then indicate the folder where the DPX files would be. Color conforms them to an EDL. This works.

What if you don’t have an EDL? Just DPX Files?

Thanks for this response but looking through the manual and your pposting still leves gaos in actually how to go about doing this – i bring in the edl and i see a bunch of offline clips on the timeline but then directing it to the dpx folder is not clear – can u further explain this workflow?

    thanks

I did that and it worked down to the last frame.

If it doesn’t then the timecodes in the EDL and those in the DPX files don’t match.
