DNX is not ADOBE, it’s Avid’s, and though supported in premiere, it is not optimized for it as it is for avid products. Just like ProRes in premiere. In my opinion the lack of a proper mastering/proxy/unifying codec in premiere is one of it’s strongest weaknesses. Was sure Adobe would be smart enough to acquire Cineform… Now they have to buy GoPro too 🙂

Avid will maintain and further develop DNX (hopefully) as it is still invaluable to many Avid workflows

As for DNX

DNX is good and solid, but it is not ProRes, not yet at least. For one, it does not have SD or greater than HD options, in fact, it is strictly HD 720 or 1080. Furthermore, it still does not have a 444 variant, and always clips to 709. And last, ProRes 4×4 is 12 bit color depth, DNX does not top 10 to my best knowledge.

All that said, I use Media Encoder all the time, it’s amazing for encoding flash, it works fast, converts hours of weird .MTS files to good looking ProRes in no time and it’s simple to use.

Recently I had 3D animations in different sizes and resolutions I had to unify to 1080. I tried compressor ( with every possible setting) and Episode, but Media Encoder blew them all.

actually yes

i noticed later that the project opened slower than other small projects i’ve been playing with.

much slower

so slow i was worried it froze.

but once it opened it works with no lagging at all, even loading thumbnails is fast.

i must say though, that the station i tested is old, and the graphic card is a bare minimum ATI 1900
add to that the rather slow WD ext drive (even as a RAID0 on eSATA)

i’ll measure times tomorrow, and i’ll try the same test on a better faster system..

we used it in our studio on an Internet tapeless project
the keyer is superb and very real-time

we are still learning it, from manual and forums

we’re about to start offering a fast courses on FCPX
so spending a lot of time with it

which is not helping me like it more

but i’m starting to accept it. somewhat…

whether i feel the product is complete, adequate or currently usable in a professional environment does not mean i will stop what i do for a living (partly) and refuse to properly learn it, and offer the best training i can to others who want to as well.

and i will not teach anything that is not true about it…

this thread is a good and (might be) useful initiative

however, we have to be logical, and its a game that plays both ways. i can imagine apple fixing many things in next updates/versions of X but they won’t change the concept, and we will have to either learn to adapt or find new tools.

i like project based too, and after 15 years of editing and 8 of training i feel a bit lost in a timeline based project with global media, but i can definitely see my workflows change and adapt to it, knowing it makes little sense that apple will back up from it.

i won’t adapt to not sending out OMF, not working with XML and not having access to older project files

i would add to the list a more customizable interface

and i still hope i’m wrong about it, and i’ve made improvements since yesterday, but it feels that the new trim tools suffer from over simplicity.
i still didn’t figure out complex trimming on this thing (audio left, video right for example)

a “send to color” feature would be nice… at least as long its still around…
they had a “send to shake” option when shake was on its death bed…

i’ll have more when i’m done with the manual

if it is apple’s VISTA, and they will acknowledge it, like Microsoft did at the time. then by next NAB we will see solutions to many things that bug us in this release. and peace will reign again

the scary scenario is that they don’t care, or worst… believe there is nothing wrong with this version

we must feedback, and feedback a lot

maybe some online petition page?
