You can use Automatic Duck to open FCP projects

as for workflow. You have a minimum of two folders per project, your project folder, the avid mediafiles folder and potentially, an assets folder for stuff you might link via AMA.

All the media you captured and transcoded in all of your projects in concentrated and arranged in one folder structure. When you want to move a project you have the consolidate option (similar to copy media in FCP) or other media management tools in the Media tool..

It might sound different to you at first, but it’s actually quite simple and well put together. And a sturdier media management system than FCP.

Just commenting on the title you chose…
Changing your toolset is never easy. But it shouldn’t be regarded as a growing pain, or any sort of pain for all it matters…
this will reflect on how you learn the software.

I say this from years of training experience, it’s hard to self learn a software like Avid properly, especially if you come from years of experience on FCP. And more so if you plan to quickly learn to use it as aprofessional tool.

I know FCP and AVID well enough to tell you that with proper training, differences and conflicts are minimal, and it’s a rather smooth transition.

Alone (or with tutorials) it becomes much harder.

And as of waveforms… A nice recent addition is the RTAS panel on every track, you have a waveform button there, individual for each track.

It’s not, IO Express is 995$ and it’s a versatile product that can work with many softwares (FCP, Avid, PPR, AE and probably more) it’s external, so can potentially work on a lap top if you ever needed it and most importantly, it will do what you want it to, while the GT 120 won’t.

BTW… The Matrox MXO mini is 495$, does what you need (even knows how to ballpark calibrate consumer LCD tv sets) and has some of the IO express qualities I mentioned above. I worked with it several times recently and it’s a nice little piece of hardware.

As the link you give is a still it’s hard to tell…
However, I think I can imagine what this looked like.

It’s a blend of two fields, motion graphics and compositing. And yes, you can do this stuff with motion.

But you have to learn practices and techniques, accumulate experience and improve your skills.

There are no buttons or five steps to get you there.

There are generators and templates in FCPX and Motion that do similar things (though probably simplified compared to what you are looking for) there are also websites with collections of more elaborated templates,

But it will never look like what talented people cooked up to match a project’s style and needs.

You can look for motion graphics and compositing books on amazon, some are excellent.
You could watch tutorials and start there… Some Adobe after effects tuts are amazing ( even if you don’t use it, it will open your mind and give you ideas) some great ones here too on the Cow.
And if you like it, and feel you get it, go get proper training somewhere, or be someone’s assistant or probably both.

Once you learn the tools… You just look at these and you figure out a millions way to possibly reconstruct them

Unless you really need the extra screen space, and work on a huge desk 🙂

You’d be better off investing in an io express… or wait a little for Avid’s next move in support for io cards.
