    There’s no book for 6.0
The next edition is for 6.5. The book for 5.5 will do fine until you upgrade to 6.5 or 7.0.

Never done HD in AE, but I’ve done a lot of editorial with 24p HD originated material (downconverted to SD). When the camera moves too quickly there’s a tremendous amount of jitter. This is related to the pulldown – the movement between frames is far enough that the offset of the fields produces jitter.

Posting your comp settings would be helpful. Frame rate, progressive, interlaced, etc.

I’m out of my element here.

No. The Intuos 3 doesn’t have a clear overlay. I would send it back or contact Wacom.
I need to clean mine, I think I’ll pass on the compressed air based on your experience.

“Oh…and the edit system has NOTHING TO DO with your rate. They are hiring you for your editing ability, not for your skill with an edit system.”

This has some truth. From a freelance perspective it’s absolutely true, but in regards to a staff position it doesn’t have legs. Most employers don’t want to take the risk or spend money training someone. They need someone that can jump right in and start cutting. If you’ve nvever cut on a DS/Nitris then you’re not even considered for the job. So even if you can out cut Murch using XDV it doesn’t matter – there’s no offer on the table. It doesn’t happen. I’ve never seen a job post that said, “Avid DS editor needed – no experience necessary”.

No one can give you an accurate number. There are far too many variables: quality of your reel, type of industry (gov’t, advertising, corporate) and basic suppli & demad (how many Avid editors are in your market).

The other thing is that the term ‘Avid Editor’ is a fairly broad description. What flavor Avid? Symphony, Nitris, Composer, XDV or FreeDV.

I would hit some web sites for an indicator of what the market will pay for your skill set.
    mandy
    productionhub
    craigslist
    entertainmentjobs?
    etc.

    I’m unfamiliar with hdmi.

And I don’t understand your current workflow. The DVD player is converting digital to analog for componet output and then you’re converting back to digital (SDI) by using a converter. There’s nothing to be gained by converting the componet signal to SDI. IMO you should use the componet inputs on the digibeta deck.

MPEG-2 is what it is, a compressed format. There’s not a lot you can do to improve the quality. The onus is on the film makers to provide their film in a high quality format.

  • search the AE help files for ‘Stencil Alpha”.
