Get a 2-nd PC with 2 disks, one for OS/programs and a second disk for data. Connect them and synchronize your data. In a domain you can have that done automatically on booting or before shutting down.
This may not be the most common setup for a mere hobbyist, but this is how I did it:
In our situation we have 2 servers at physically quite different locations, connected through a VPN for daily backup, our own mail relay servers, our own domain and a number of PC’s and notebooks (around 8) connected either wired or wireless, running under 2003 Server Enterprise and Exchange Server 2007 with full synchronization of off line files, disk mapping, GFI and Symantec protection etc. and all of the individual PC’s and notebooks have their own slip streamed DVD with their own user profiles, software and settings. I realize this is not the typical setup for a mere hobbyist, but with the help of my son I am quite happy with our setup. -
Why would you want a backup of the tapes? Can’t you store them in a safe place or even copy the tapes to tape? This ‘backup’ would require more than 2.2 TB of storage and disks fail with more frequency than tapes.

This format is meant for display, not editing. Either use Elements, which is more suited to consumer formats, or get a different camera.

If you want to get from A to B and are happy to do that in a 1950 Volkswagen Beetle (comparable to USB), you will get there reliably. If you want to use a new Volkswagen Passat (comparable to eSATA), it will get you there faster, in more comfort and with better fuel economy and less pollution. The choice is yours.

For capturing with DV Rack or OnLocation, 5.400 is enough. For editing 7.200 is the minimum. Never use a USB external for editing, it is OK for backup, but that is about it. For editing get eSATA disks. Also have a look at the minimum requirements as indicated on the Adobe website.

What do you mean with the quality is not so good? How are your playback settings? Do you have the latest driver?
