    Hey all,

Backing up dozens of gigs of data on a weekly basis onto DVD takes up precious time and is getting old, but I’m having trouble wrapping my head around the whole storage and backup concept, so maybe you can help clear things up for me.
What I’d like to have is a separate area (an external drive, for example) where all my project files and their supporting media files can live and I can work on these files from this external, or remote, location, instead of locally.
Then I would like that external or other storage location to be backed up on as often as a daily basis.

I don’t really know where to begin in my quest to create such an environment, so any insight as to what devices to look at, and what backup solutions there are, is greatly appreciated.

As I think and type, maybe really all I need is a more efficient backup solution for my local internal drives?

    Thanks Cow,

Get a 2-nd PC with 2 disks, one for OS/programs and a second disk for data. Connect them and synchronize your data. In a domain you can have that done automatically on booting or before shutting down.

This may not be the most common setup for a mere hobbyist, but this is how I did it:
In our situation we have 2 servers at physically quite different locations, connected through a VPN for daily backup, our own mail relay servers, our own domain and a number of PC’s and notebooks (around 8) connected either wired or wireless, running under 2003 Server Enterprise and Exchange Server 2007 with full synchronization of off line files, disk mapping, GFI and Symantec protection etc. and all of the individual PC’s and notebooks have their own slip streamed DVD with their own user profiles, software and settings. I realize this is not the typical setup for a mere hobbyist, but with the help of my son I am quite happy with our setup.

Look into external eSATA drives also. Supported if you have a newish motherboard and the backup speed makes USB2.0 users cry. Don’t rely on hard drives for long term storage. For that look into some older DLT tape backup systems, or if you have the cash, LTO. For file sycronization google “syncback” who have a nice utility for keeping two drives mirrored.
