Yeah, because it has already undergone severe compression and when you finish your editing it needs to be compressed again.

If you want to avoid problems, use Elements. VOB are not meant to be edited, specially not in PP.

Either do your slomos in AE or use the Twixtor plug-in. PP is rather bad with slomos.

Take one long HDV clip, let’s say 40+ minutes. Put it in the source monitor, set in and out points, drag it to the time line, repeat that for another 20 instances of the clip and then check whether you have audio lagging when playing the time line. Do not make sub clips, just instances. If you have no audio lagging, you are OK.
The reason I mention this is because I had this problem and it has never been solved. I had to remove the plug-in to get rid of the audio lagging, which defeats the purpose of the plug-in.

I don’t understand your motive to consider the PD 170 as an upgrade from your VX2000. If XLR is important to you, you could use a Beachtek or similar on your VX2000. In terms of advantage of the PD 170 the very slight better low light capability is negligent IMO and not worth the investment. The FX-1 has much worse low light capabilities, lacks XLR and the form factor and weight are a disadvantage in comparison to your current camera. If you want to go the HDV route I would have a look at the FX-7, which resembles the VX-2000 in form factor and weight very much and has the advantage of the 20x zoom capability and CMOS chips, which reduce streaking very much. An alternative could be the Canon XH-A1. The A1 has better manual controls than the FX-7 and has XLR.

I would not de-interlace, because of the resolution loss, and because the projector can very likely handle interlaced material. Additionally, the PD 150/170 record interlaced anyway, so all you have achieved by de-interlacing is halving your resolution.
