Sites with free access are in abundance, the software is not free if you talk about worthwhile plug-ins. AE, Boris, SA, PI, etc.

You could opt for Autodesk Smoke 2007 Extension 1. It runs on Linux and in the good, fast, and cheap paradigm, Smoke is good and fast.
