You did it right using Export Movie. This file can be easily edited further with AE, but only as a single clip.

The best archiving method is to export with the same settings as the project, avoiding conversions. For instance, in a DV project, export movie with MS DV AVI codec. Do not use outdated codecs like Cinepak or heavily compressed codecs like MPEG.
If your internal disks are filled up, get an external disk and copy those files with Explorer to an external disk.

Disconnect your speakers. It makes no difference, since accessing other files is still possible, but not advisable.

What render? Why not razor? I suggest you start reading the manual before trying to use a (semi)pro application or get some schooling on NLE.

Your material is unsuitable for editing, just for watching. If you still want to edit unsuitable material, this is the easiest way, unless you want to use a very complex and convoluted way, using AVISynth scripts.
