Best way to transfer DVD VOB into editable AVI in PP2?
Hi,
I want to transfer VOB files from DVD into EDITABLE and hopefully lossless AVIs into PP2.
I’ve tried doing Divx AVIs with Total Video Converter and there’s a problem with the audio that arises keeping it from being imported into PP2.
I’ve tried using a DVD Player and sending in the files via a Dazzle converter, but realized that DVD Player(s), simply just deteriorates the image to their likings. A Malata darkened up the image seriously while a Samsung did the same to a different extent…
Tried Auto GK, but for some reason the clip aborted the transcoding procedure after a while… Might be still good to try, but I currently can’t afford loosing more long transfer times over this (while still not knowing if they will work in PP2).
Read other posts and MPEG STREAMCLIP looks like a interesting alternative, but the program requests to remove completely Quicktime from my PC and revert to a earlier version (6.1) (or get the alternative version) which has specific needed plugins… Something I’m not willing to do at this point.
I’m waiting now on CloneDVD to extract my VOB files into AVIs and DEARLY HOPE it will work. But the extracting time is atrociously long.
SOOOO: has anybody here have the BEST working situation for such as task?
Deadline is way too crazy on me now and the amount of work I have is just insane…

Play the DVD and use your DV camera as a pass through for capturing DV AVI type2.

Thought of that, but considering that I have already tried with 2 different DVD players and seeing the quality vary very much (on similar aspects, such as the darkening of the image), I would then less expect my DAZZLE DV bridge to be the problem. So I feel like the same problem might happen here. Or does use of a camera as the bypasser changes something?

Your material is unsuitable for editing, just for watching. If you still want to edit unsuitable material, this is the easiest way, unless you want to use a very complex and convoluted way, using AVISynth scripts.

I use AVS Media Converter all the time to do what you want.

It’s only $40.The quality is obviously not as good as the original footage, but it’s usually good enough.

Use Tmpgenc express, it will let you convert the entire DVD to uncompressed AVI in one shot.

I have TMPGenc but didn’t know it could do that…. Question is though, is that AVI file editable afterwards? Many of these other programs such as CloneDVD and Total Video Converter can put back the VOB file into an AVI, but don’t try editing them out after (at least in PP2). I’ve been stricken with the file not wanting to be imported due to bad audio (no good sample rate) or the format becomes squeezed or being reduced, etc… Which could also be related to some potential bad settings I’ve set before (although I thoroughly verify each of them), but anyhow, still becomes annoying and time consuming.

It has to be one of the newest versions of TMPGenc, and yes it will be fully editable. It is uncompressed after all.

I’ve found MPEG Streamclip an absolute life saver for the times there is no other option than to edit from a dvd. I’d just like to point out that if you do not want to replace Quicktime with Quicktime Alternative, you don’t have to revert to an older version of Quicktime, rather you have to buy the 20$ mpeg-2 Quicktime plugin from Apple for the software to work.
Another very nice free encoding utility is called “Super”.

It has an option of importing .vob files straight off a dvd which I’ve tested as working. While it has an option to encode to avi-dv, I’ve never tried it so I can’t say if it works. However it definatly can encode the vob into the huffYUV lossless codec which PP can work with. -
Streamclip works great for me.
Buy the plug-in for QT frolm Apple and you’re good to go.Bill
