Agreed. BUT my DVD was lost, either by apple or by the post. Who knows? I ordered the upgrade in march, have been a registered user and owner since 2003 and bought the 5 – studio upgrade only last autumn.
Still it has taken 2,5 months of screenshots and pictures from my studio to get the update.
Now the dvd’s are on their way, though.

You’d maybe be well off to read up and test some compressor/limiter tools. There are a few handy in FCP/Soundtrack, though I’ve never used them.
Three hints:
1. Trust your ears
2. Put on your hard hat and do not fall into the immediate “louder is always better” pit
3. Trust your ears.With some compression and limiting, youd’d smooth out the peaks and make it easier to bring up the general level of your mix.
But: Test!
if it sounds like s***, it probably is…. -;)Compression and limiting is considered a alchemystic science of it’s own by quite a few, but as long as you don’t try it, you’ll never know what your opinion’s going to be on THAT subject.

I only today realized this is not a Varicam only feature.

1080 shouldn’t be a problem, just drop it in an i50 timeline and off you go. You may want to set the field dominance to “none”.
This is how Varicam footage is edited:
Upconvert in 1200 deck to 1080 and edit as 25 pfs (i.e. in a i50 timeline)Gunleik

I’m really curious if there’s any difference at all between these two in PAL land, as the stream is actually natively p25 and the data-amount should not differ any from i50.
In NTSC land you save a lot of soace as the p24 stream in 24p mode is saved within an i60 with pulldown, and recording natively in p24 (pn) saves about 50% of the data, but in pal…
The thing I’m most curious about is how you’re planning to edit your 720 p25 material.
That’s sorta the question which is keeping the rest of us on the fence these days.

Your problem has been discussed a lot.
There simply isn’t a 720 p25 solution out there as of yet.

So what to do?
Some suggestions:
Shoot the HVX at 1080 p25. Then you’re OK.Dump through an AJA that can upscale to 1080 psf25 (p25 in an i50 stream) like you would with a varicam/AJ 1200 solution. No Firewire for this one…
Wait for the NLE people get their act together and remember that the US is actually not the whole world.
Send a polite mail to the BBC. They use a lot of HVX’s together with FCP, but I suspect they’re going the 1080 route.
We’re quite a few in your shoes right now, so don’t forget to send a polite request to apple on their feedback pages.
