HD, like SD comes in all flavors. What you are refering to is HDV which is even more compressed and with a considered worse GOP fram compression, than the i-frame based DV.
HDV and DV has the same dataflow, so the calculus does not look too good for HDV.The point is: Go un-/less- compressed for aqusition and editing, then you can finish to any format.

Your issues are not unique!
They’ve been discussed a lot on the FCP forum. (Do a search over there)
my solution has been to buy BitVice from http://www.innobits.se.
This solves most mpeg2 issues for me, still on some (very old and shaky 16 mm dubbed to digi) footage, I’m still playing around with different options and settings in both Compressor and BitVice.
You can dl a free, full working demo to check if it solves your issues. It leaves a watermark but otherwise it’s the real deal.

Haven’t done HDV, so this is just from posts I’ve read, but AFAIK you cannot preview HDV material as you capture, like you can with DV.
Do a search. This sounds familiar.

You have the Canopus ADVC 110.
Works like a charm and has the AD option for capturing as well.
Or you may check out Decklink or AJA’s products for more advanced solutions.

easist thing is easily to re-record the audio if you have sufficient equipment (route the audioout of one computer while you playback from quicktime) through some digital audio device and record it on another.
To soundtrack, Cubase, Logic, Peak or whatever.I have VERY mixed results with converters, but here you have a few:
You’ll need 48k/16 bits aiffs or wavs to have any fun with FCP.
You video is probably ripped off a DVD. The best thing would be to get access to the source material….

Probably the audio is compressed in a format QT/FCP refuses to recognise in some contexts. They are picky beasts.
Try exporting audio as AIFF/WAV @ 48k and video as DV (sans audio)
I guess you’d get along just fine.

for web h.264 seems to give beautifull results.
I’ve recently bought BitVice from http://www.innobits.se for mpeg2 encoding.
Stunning results compared to compressor.
