Working on some early to mid 60’s TV shows shot an film (in gloriously B&W), dubbed to digi and grainy and jumpy as they come. Takes some time, but it does amazing work.

Still have to do the audio manually tho’.

If you capture through hd-sdi, you could go to other codecs than uncompressed – like DVCPRO-HD or maybe even photo-jpeg FWIK.

Then the files would be more handlable and you would be within an I-frame format.

HM. I couldn’t get the menus up on the monitor either, but sorta managed with the manual.

To get to the “25” menu, you set the “local/remote” switch in the middle, and tap the “mode” marked tape controller once, then page up (or down) untill you find the “25” value and use the +/- value buttons to set to “3” (“1” is default) and hit the “set” button. Then restart and Hey Presto.

BUT

As Shane is mentioning you’ll need a HD capture card.

You can do the downrez’ing simply by using the Component out fom the deck, I also remember all of a sudden getting SD images from one of the outputs when playing around with it.

But why on earth do you want an SD image?

OK – here’s what you do:

(you have to have a 1200 with the HD-SDI board to make this work)

You find the menu 25, set value to 3, reboot the 1200.

Then you capture to a 1080 i50 timeline with either a uncompressed or a DVCPRO HD codec.

Just did this on an online. worked like a charm.

What one does is capturing from a deck (like the Pana AJ 1200) which internally upconverts to 1080 i50. The only snag is that the deck is 25k$ +++ with optional (and totally neccesary) HD-SDI and Firewire boards. (sorta 5k each)

But if you come from f. ex. the HVX which is an IT-centric solution – thus no tapes whatsoever and no HD-SDI out so you can do an upconvert in a capture board, well then you’re sorta… stuck.

Problem is that H.264 is _NOT_ uncompressed. It takes heavi calculus to decode the files. The HD/RAID is hardly the problem, but you’ll need a lot of RAM, a good buffering setting and a fast computer to playback heavy h.264 files.

It’s actually a lot easier to playback uncompressed material, if you have the disk and system throughput to keep up with the raw dataflow.

Answer: Yes! -;))

Both is possible.

I’ve (so far successfully) built my own external RAID from a 8 port PCI SATA adapter and an external PC cabinet filled up with disks and fans only.

This is the cheapo way to go, but it works flawlessly for 6 months now.

You could try this to run hypercard on osx:

Then use SnapzPro to capture the videos and stacks, and usxe those videos for the DVD…
