Universal updates – anyone seen them? DVCPRO HD PAL codecs?
Posted by Gunleik Groven on March 25, 2006 at 2:56 pmHeading says it all…
Anyone have any insight when we’ll get 720 p25/1080 p25 codecs for PAL?
As there are quite some cameras supporting this, it’s a pitty that 1080 i50 still is the only edit base for PAL.

What one does is capturing from a deck (like the Pana AJ 1200) which internally upconverts to 1080 i50. The only snag is that the deck is 25k$ +++ with optional (and totally neccesary) HD-SDI and Firewire boards. (sorta 5k each)
But if you come from f. ex. the HVX which is an IT-centric solution – thus no tapes whatsoever and no HD-SDI out so you can do an upconvert in a capture board, well then you’re sorta… stuck.

March 25, 2006 at 7:26 pmwell I have a pana HD1200A (hired not bought) but can’t navigate the menu system (or even undertsnd the manual) in order to get the right settings. Nor does FCP seem to suppourt 720p25 anywayz. Life sucks.

March 26, 2006 at 12:37 amHM. I couldn’t get the menus up on the monitor either, but sorta managed with the manual.
To get to the “25” menu, you set the “local/remote” switch in the middle, and tap the “mode” marked tape controller once, then page up (or down) untill you find the “25” value and use the +/- value buttons to set to “3” (“1” is default) and hit the “set” button. Then restart and Hey Presto.
BUT
As Shane is mentioning you’ll need a HD capture card.
You can do the downrez’ing simply by using the Component out fom the deck, I also remember all of a sudden getting SD images from one of the outputs when playing around with it.
But why on earth do you want an SD image?
Here’s a post with the link to the manual:
